There may also have been a sealant of some sort between the 2 halves of the hull, be careful once you remove the staples. Slow & easy, the oscillating saw can be good for separating the upper from the lower lip......

I don't see any sealant in between. There was a black substance on the outside that is now mostly contained in the rub rail.

Glad to see you back working on her. Can you post a pic of the Cap/Hull Joint?

Staples are pretty strong, and they will not straighten without damaging the fiberglass. I got the oscilating saw out and, stuck the blade in the gap, then turned it on until the staple was cut. I'm getting virtually zero damage doing it that way. I'v got about 8 test staples cut and I like the results, but will wait on the others because I still need to pull the seats and get some help when it comes time to pull the cap..

Yeah, I thought it was a Sandwich hull. Were you able to salvage the rubber in the rubrail?

Rub rail is in one piece. made sure not to do any more damage removing it, but it is cracked in several places. If I cannot find the profile new, I will glue it back together with rubber cement and make the best of it.

How do I get the cable/ pulley apart from the quick clips for the motor steering connection at the back?

Re: 1961 Custom Craft Sea Ray Rebuild

Have help coming on friday to pull the cap, so I gotta get it ready tomorrow/ friday before 1.00 PM. Were figuring on 2hrs to get the staples cut and figure the rest out before pulling, but seats still gotta come out and I have to make sure everything that needs disconnected is disconnected beyond the staples.

Also putting my '51 Chevy back on the road so I can get it to the glass shop. and need to change my trucks oil, so it will be a tight 2 days. I picked up an extra work day yesterday which hindered the boats progress by getting zero done on it

Pics in a few. One thing I can say is that the original build quality of the fiberglass is Horrid. Much of the original sandwich lip on the hull is disintegrated because it never got resin saturated. I have enough left to repair it, but it's a good thing it will be covered up by the rub rail. I have one bolt left in the bow support, and the top will come off

Re: 1961 Custom Craft Sea Ray Rebuild

Friends came and we got the cap off. I spent most of the day cutting staples. The cap suffered some damage, and the hull lip needs some love too. The rear of the splashwell was glued to the transom, so to save from damage, I just cut around that section and will remove it later. Re glassing that back togther will not be a great deal of work.

Entire cap is now in another workshop. The inside of the cap has 3/8" plywood for support, which I hope is still good, because it will be a PIA if I have to replace. it.

I'v been told it has no stringers in it, but there has to be something under the deck.. Pretty obvious the boat was re decked also, and why it seems sorta solid.

Re: 1961 Custom Craft Sea Ray Rebuild

Going to get some plywood and 2x4's in a couple days.. I want to build an on- trailer cradle before I do anything else. I'm thinking a 2x4 framework built within the trailer as it sits, and then clamped to the trailer with some bar clamps..

As for the plywood, what thickness should I get on the deck? I have no problems upgrading from what the factory did as I think their construction methods were lacking.. I know the transom should be 2 thicknesses of 3/4" laminated together

1/2" to 5/8" should be more than adequate for your deck on this size boat. What are the 2x4's for???

To build a cradle with. I'm not going to remove it from the trailer, but I want the cradle to basically be built right under the boat and clamped to the trailer frame so that the boat has all the support that it needs.

Re: 1961 Custom Craft Sea Ray Rebuild

How much fiberglass supplies will I need? I know what types, and I know at least 5 gallons of 435 resin, but how much yardage will I need? I assume each type requires a simmilar amount.. Boat is said to have no stringers but I have not verified that yet

It's hard to say how much glass you'll need until you get the deck removed and we can see what's below

Re: 1961 Custom Craft Sea Ray Rebuild

That's what I figured. I got anxious and began construction on the cradle last night. Tonight, I will probably finish it and then I can start cutting. Need to remove the seats too, but now I can see they are fastened at the front
