If the shop is close by, pull the boat/motor over there and compare the lower units/legs. As F_R said, you will be able to tell if both have the quiet housing and if the units will swap. If it's a match, make the swap...including your impeller from the damaged LU and go for a test run. If it bangs out of gear, too, you'll have to replace the clutch dog...not real hard to do if you can turn a wrench.

Well I got the lower end yesterday and it seemed to be in good shape. I took the impeller and water pump and o rings from my old one and put it on yesterday. I also put brand new oil in it. so i hope it works today. One thing though. the cavitation plate has a small piece missing in the back. do you think this will affect me at such a low HP.

Re: 1961 Evinrude Lark 3 40hp. Problems

Well Happy Memorial Day to everyone. I Hope it was great. Mine was. The motor ran GREAT!!! The lower end fit well and did fine. I was realy afraid to put people in it. but after alittle push from everyone i had 2 other guys about 185 to 200lbs each get it plus me. we took it out after it warmed up and it came out of the water and onto plane perfect. I could tell that the cavitation plate was missing a piece on the edge when i was going into turns just alittle vibration but other than that it did great. one thing happened though. While i was driving by myself the gear cable broke where it attaches to the motor. The black sleeve that goes over the cable and the metal rod that attaches it to the motor in order to change gears up at the bow broke and fell in the water!!!! So i have no way of changing gears from the helm. There is nothing wrong with the actual cable but the piece at the end came loose. Does anyone have an extra one laying around? I need one and do not want to buy a whole new set of cables. Any Help would be great appreciated. I will post pics soon.

Re: 1961 Evinrude Lark 3 40hp. Problems

I have another question. I am wondering if my motor has a Stator or not. My battery dies quick when i have the stereo on and i was wondering if the motor has a way of charger the battery while its running. i know it does not have a alternator but later models did. there is a spot for one. but if it has a stator then will i need to put an alternator on it. If so where can i get the upgrade for this motor to put one on.

Re: 1961 Evinrude Lark 3 40hp. Problems

i believe that motor didnt come wth a stator/

so what it came with was a dc amp charging unit. not very charging though about 10 amps at wot

if u have a unit somehting like the electric starter except it has a belt coming to it on the right side then u dont have a charging unit.

Well the motor does not have a pulley coming from the side. where the generator would be. So i am guessing there is no way it is charging back. If it is where is it. I am wondering if there was a device you can add on that would charge it. Any ideas.

Re: 1961 Evinrude Lark 3 40hp. Problems

What I am running in the boat is this..

1. runnings lights front back.
2. Car CD player with 4 outdoor speakers.
3. 500 watt car amp with 12 inch sub
4. in future (boat horn) not yet thought.

What is the best to charge the battery while running or when i am sitting anchored with friends. i have read post on float chargers and things to attach to the battery but what is the exact thing i need to keep the battery charged so i wont have dead battery.

You will not keep a battery charged running a 500 watt amp in a boat. Even with the motor running. You're probably running at least an average continuous load of 150 watts with just your audio. That's well over the output of the generator of the motor (10 amps on a good day), if it is even equipped with one. The "device" you're looking for is a portable generator. There is a device powered by dilithium crystals that I heard about somewhere that would probably keep your battery charged all day.

i like the idea of having a solar panel charger on the battery while i am using it. do you thihnk this is a good idea. also if so which one shoudl i get. there is ones from 1.5 watts to 15 watts. let me know.

Re: 1961 Evinrude Lark 3 40hp. Problems

Just to give you an example...at 13v nominal battery voltage and a 10A load (radio), you are drawing 150 watts.

Your best bet would be to get two good marine batteries, and use one for the audio while parked, and one just for 'important things' like starting, lights, and horn.

Most likely your motor doesn't charge the batteries, and so you will need to charge them back up when you are not using the boat. Deep Cycle marine batteries are different from car batteries. They are designed to go almost dead and then get recharged. The less time you leave them without a charge, the better, so you will want to put them on the charger as soon as you can after coming off the lake.

Re: 1961 Evinrude Lark 3 40hp. Problems

OK. I have a 1961 Evinrude motor that does not have a way of charging back to the battery. no generator or alternator. my question is this. I have been told i could get a solar panel charger and have it hooked up so it will recharge the battery. Is this a good idea or other ideas? What I am trying to do is while the boat is running have the panel hooked up so it will keep the battery charged up. I have the following hooked up

Starter
Lights
Stereo 4 speakers
Car amp pushing single sub
.

I know that the stereo and Amp pull the most but i just want to make sure that i am keeping the battery up when we may pull over and anchor the boat and turn the motor off and just listen to music for alittle bit. while we are sitting listening to music i would like to have something to recharge while its being on. so let me know. Northern Freight has solar panel ranging from 5 watts to 15 watts. not sure what i would need. i mean wouldnt think i would need much. also they have 2 types. regular charger or trickle charger. I have a deep cycle marine battery.. so which one would be better..

Re: 1961 Evinrude Lark 3 40hp. Problems

A couple things...

In order to run that radio and amp, you will need about 10 of the 15 watt ones all hooked up in parallel if you want to run them all day without draining the battery. It would have to be sunny.

By comparison, your car has a 100 Amp alternator that can provide much more current to charge that the radio draws. That is about 1500 watts.

The motor draws zero battery when running. It ONLY needs power to run the starter when you start the motor. After than, you can disconnect the battery and the motor will run until you run out of gas.

The lights might draw 30-40 watts when they are on. You can cut this to 10 watts if you get the new LED type lights.

The safest set up to be sure you have power to start the motor after a long day on the lake would be to have 2 seperate batteries, one for the starter and lights, one for the radio and amp. When you get back to the dock, hook them up to a couple 6 Amp battery chargers overnight in the garage and you will be ready to go again the next day.

My '58 18hp doesn't charge the battery, and I have to recharge the battery about every month or 2, using it every weekend for 10-15 starts or so.

Hope that helps.

Re: 1961 Evinrude Lark 3 40hp. Problems

thanks for your help!!! I like the idea of having two batteries. I was wondering if this situation. read it through hopefully it makes sense. ok once i put the baot in the water. i have a fully charged battery. i hook up the lights, the motor, the radio, the amp. i got about my day on the lake with the motor on. so the day goes by and we decide to park the boat and anchor out somewhere on the lake. so i turn the motor off and just have the radio and amp/sub on. we let it play for a few hours maybe.. while its playing(no motor on) i have the solar panel hooked up to the battery while the radio is on. so its slowly charging back from the sun. the days about to end and we are about to leave and so i unplug the radio and the amp , so the motor is the only thing to battery. crank it and head back to the dock. that ngiht hook the battery up to the charger for the night. how does that sound. that would be the best situation. i dont know if i have room for another battery back there. any ideas would be great. i mean. the other day when i was cleaning the boat and working on it , i had the radio and amp on for about 3 hours and i never noticed a dead battery. so i mean i guess i could use it that way but use that solar panel while i am sitting still or anchored to charge back the battery. so would it be better to get a regular solar charger or a trickle charger...

Re: 1961 Evinrude Lark 3 40hp. Problems

If it were just a 5-10 watt radio with built in amplifiers, you would be fine. The problem is your 500 watt amplifier. That will suck the battery dry if you are cranking up the volume. The solar panel will be insignificant in trying to keep up, unless you spend $300-1500 on a big one. They make them, mostly for sailboats running water desalination during ocean cruising.

How big is the motor again? How hard is it to pull start? Is that an option? My 18hp is really easy to pull start if it has been running recently. At least then you would be able to have that as a back up.

Another option is to get a 'battery state of charge' meter. I think Minnkota makes them. Push a button every now and then and it tells you how full the battery still is. They areen't real accurate, but probably would work well enough.

The power that amplifier consumes is exponential compared to the volume. Double the volume and it cuts your battery life in 4. Triple the volume, and it take roughly 9 times the battery power.

They do make Class D amplifiers, which are much more efficient, but they are hard to find and much more expensive.

Re: 1961 Evinrude Lark 3 40hp. Problems

this motor is really easy to pull when warmed up. really hard when cold.

i would suggest to down size everything for friendly use. maybe 1-2 speaker. all im saying is its going to get expensive. u can hold off on the horn get a whistle or air horn in a can works great. lights is a must. even if u get a charging unit on that motor it only charges like 10 amps at like wide open.

make sure when ur shifting u do it quick and swift. not slow! also make sure ur shift rods and such r properly adjusted so u may not be shifting right and ur clutch dog may slip out
