Hello,

When trolling with this motor the shifter arm intermittently starts to chatter and almost vibrates out of forward back to neutral. When I give it more throttle the motor jumps a little bit and then re-engages back into forward. It doesn’t seem to happen at higher speeds. I have attached a video to show the issue.
Can you help to point me in the direction of what’s going on and how to fix it.

Thank you!

Check the shift connecter in the exhaust housing.----Notches on shift rods MUST line up with holes before bolts are put in.-----Next check adjustment at the shift lever.----If those are good take lower unit apart as clutch and forward gear dogs could be rounded off.

Thank you for the response, sorry for the follow up questions as this is my first outboard and I have been trying to teach myself as much as I can while getting this motor running.

When you say check the shift connecter in the exhaust housing, what I am I looking for there? Just that it is connected properly? What adjustment at the shift lever?

Thank you again!

see pic mid-way down the lower housing is a small plate ... remove it to find the link connecting the 2 halves of the shift rod. the rounded ends must be seated inside the link and the bolts locks the 2 rods into one. :)

if you are going to work on oldies you should get the book CHEAP OUTBOARDS by Max Wawrzyniak which explains all this ..

^^like they said. You might open up the clamp just a little with a bladed screwdriver, just to make sure the rod goes fully in place.
