AHHH.. Guess you missed the edit to the previous page!! Oh well, here's another proof of the deed.

Paint seems to be drying nicely. Looks like the coverage is decent. A final full coat should make a respectable job if I can avoid getting "runs". It's going to be interesting to see how "hard" the hardener product makes the paint.

My next big challenge will be to roll it back over without damaging the new paint!

Your gloss might be easier to clean if nothing else. Something I hadn't thought of ... hmmmm

The satin looks great !! I'm kinda curious about how the hardener worked with the satin finish. I know the gloss turned out hard as nails..

Thanks for the "attaboys" one and all !

(NOTE: This base coat formula dried to touch in about 3 hours at 60F at 20% humidity. After 36 hrs. the paint seems fully cured. Temps went as low as 52 degrees in my garage. The satin paint has a low sheen finish. About what I expected it to look like. I think it will do a good job of showing off the lapstrake shape.)

I noticed this AM, while lightly running my hand over the paint, a lot of tiny little "nubs" sticking up. Not sure if this is overspray that settled, or what. I'm sure its not dust as I ran an air cleaner in the garage before spraying and it was wiped down well. I did have to ventilate some while spraying, maybe some junk came in. Luckily it seems to wipe off easily.

At least it's not bird do do, sticks falling from my tree, dust blowing off my driveway or heaps of pollen!!

Not sure how to gauge the hardener effect. Because of the low temps here I'm not going to do anything with it for a few days. If it would warm up above 60 I would push it outside.

I think the acetone did speed the surface drying but how long does it take to achieve the hardness? The paint label say "re-coat time 24 hrs". I'll be giving a about 60 hours to the first coat. That should be enough for re-coating !!

After about 40 hours I tested some 220 grit sandpaper. The paint sanded very well. It powdered nicely and was not the least bit gummy. I gave the entire hull a light rubdown, breaking the sheen and removing the "nubs". Then I finished with a "fine" 3M sanding pad (like ScotchBrite). Looks great! Almost ready for the final coat.

Re: 1961 MFG Oxford Deluxe - Beginning a New Life

On Friday the 13th production on the boat was completely halted by a tiny little 4mm stone ... a kidney stone!

After hospitalization and a procedure to remove it, I'm on the mend and back to thinking about the project. But for a few days, that's all I can do ... think ...

Once I get the "green light" from the Doc I'll be getting that final paint coat on the hull! ::)

Paints.jpg
....Even with the WHOLE TUBE of tint in a quart of white gloss all I got was a baby blue color....Reading the paint can label it specifically says to thin with naphtha. I haven't seen anyone mention using naphtha as a thinner. I have never used naphtha for anything ... I didn't even know it could be used as a paint thinner....Any comments?

Naptha is like a kind of very low octane gasoline - essentially the same thing as lighter fluid.

It is a "drier" because it is more volatile than "thinner" which makes naptha evaporate faster. It tends to allow a very thin viscosity with the advantage of drying fast enough to lose a lot of runs when skillfully applied.

Another thinner used in some circumstances is xylene.

Re: 1961 MFG Oxford Deluxe - Beginning a New Life

The weather forecast is for near perfect weather the next few days so I got up early and sprayed on the finish coat of paint on the hull. Tomorrow the temps are to be in the 70s so I will start un-masking then. After that it's out in the sun to cure ...

Looks great in the poor lighting of my garage! :D

Later in the day ...

The temperature climbed quickly this afternoon and the paint dried to touch faster than expected, so I took it outside for some moving air. Here it is with the white finish coat applied!

FINISHCOAT.jpg

I'm pretty happy with the way the paint turned out. This time it dried smooth ...no nubs, no bugs or pollen and fortunately, no "dry" spots!

For anyone needing a spray gun I have no hesitation recommending the gun I purchased from Lowes. It worked very well with my smallish Coleman compressor (6 CFM @ 40 lbs.). I never ran out of air.

For the first time spraying anything like this I did pretty well. Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

Once she's floated and the waterline is properly applied it should look really great!

Just in case anyone needs reminding of just how gorgeous a little 15 ft. lapstrake boat can be, I'm posting this pic of a Lyman I saw for sale on the internet.

What a beautiful restoration!
To me this photo represents the very best in small boat restoration.

drool....nom-nom......drool......etc...... Although, I think a '57-'58 35 hp Johnson would look even better, but that little rig is sweet, no doubt. I love the steel wheels and funky little tongue dolly/thingy too. Chick magnet all the way ;)

Yes .. I'm happy with the "satin" look. I just hope it is as washable as the gloss!

The Rusto paint worked really well with the formulas established. I was nervous about using acetone as a thinner thinking it would dry too quickly but it worked really well. With the addition of the "hardening" product it should provide a nice finish for years to come.

I think it will be easier to "touch-up" the satin finish too, but I don't want to find out too soon!

Next is a few days to fully harden up, then the "flip". I'm going through all the options of doing it without messing up my new paint!

I have a bit of inside upside down work to do to keep things moving along.

Hey Ed

Yep, I'm definitely better! One stone out ... one small one to go ... Fortunately the small one is not causing any problems, so the boat work goes on!

Hope to do the flip in a day or two. Then get to work on the deck. Hopefully that will go fairly quickly.

Appreciate your asking !

Re: 1961 MFG Oxford Deluxe - Beginning a New Life

The weather forecast here is for rain, rain, rain! Maybe 4 or 5 days of it, so I had to get the "flipover" done. With the help of my son and the indispensable backyard tree we got 'er done!

And back on the trailer as well !!

Now for even more SANDING!! Woo Hoo!
