Looks like your having a blast! isn't it funny how it always rains when you start a project??? Fan forced kerosene here, woodstove in the barn  that might not turn out pretty, barn is about 100 years old. The heater makes me nervous enough. keep up the good work!

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Thanks guy's...low 30's{f} forecast high's for the next week or so :(

Wow, what a nightmare getting the dash out. I ended up having to drill, chisel & chip around each bolt, then snap the heads off as well as drill out the L-brackets from the hull sides and on the inside ends of the gunwales. Rust and bent backsides on the bolts kicked my rear. I haven't removed all of the deck or the foam, and there's a hint of gas & oil so I thought otherwise on using the grinder or a cut off wheel...think next time I'll chance blowing up lol... whew!!!!

To top the cake off, as I'm swinging the dash around out of my way, she snapped in half...it's a great thing it was beyond saving to begin with, least I can still get the profile from the 2 pieces.

I'd like to fill these holes{from the vhf mount} along with a few other smaller ones....
When you guys use marine-tex{or whatever} for filling holes, do you use some sort of backer or kinda sandwich it around the hole? Curious as to how it would have any real staying power so to speak, as far as vibration goes at least. I was thinking about maybe using something like aluminum tape{the kind for exhaust or gas tank repairs} under the fill area...make any sense? Also how big of a hole could you comfortably use the tex/JB stuff on? Or maybe this is all for naught and I have to find a competent welder?

Thanks again for looking & offering thoughts!!!

I'm still waiting for someone to come up with a solution to the larger holes. I know you're going to need something other than a epoxy or whatever. I had a similar fun time removing the dash on the Jupiter. I replaced it with a PVC trim board from Lowes. Really nice to work with and will never rot.

Yeah, I seen that today in your thread, definitely going to look into it, You said it was nice to work with....any special cutting tips/tools required?

HSF,

I used duct tape underneath until the jb weld setup, then sanded smooth. I filled holes as large as dime sized with it. I was able to find mahogany on fleabay to replace my rotten stuff with, price suprisingly reasonable. Your project Looks great so far !:D

Nope. Just standard wood working tools. The board I bought had a deep woodgrain design on one side and was smooth on the other side. I went smooth side out.

I am having the same concerns on my boat.

I have holes everywhere. On the bow cover, transom, gunwale, etc...

Some as big as a dime or nickel.

I was considering an epoxy filler with an aluminum tape backer in a non-visible location...

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Yeah Azonic I've read the same question in multiple threads including yours with no good answer yet provided. I'll tell you one thing I tried that didn't work.....when I replaced the transom on the Jupiter, after inserting the new wood and bolting everything back together, I filled some of the unused holes in the transom skin with JB Weld and sanded them smooth. Well it didn't work. I guess there wasn't enough JB behind the skin and the little bit of contact around the edge of the holes wasn't enough. They didn't fully "pop" back out but you could clearly see a line around each hole through the paint after a short time.

I'm wondering if I had filled the holes before the transom was fully bolted in so that some more of the goop got behind the skin if it would have worked better.

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

do you think the tape backer might help?

I was afraid of the "pop" effect.. Maybe not all the way out, but breaking the seal...?

I have several holes that are right at or just below the waterline on my transom.

And my gunwale has 4 huge holes where someone used truck tie downs bolted through it as rope ties...

How about this one? cut a small piece of aluminum sheet to fit behind the whole. tack weld it in place. Will the area with 5200 and sand smooth?

Ez,

Yeah, you have to get some behind the skin to give the jb a bigger surface to bite on, otherwise the vibes will work it loose.

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Thanks Bret, That's the plan for the little holes, will have to see about the larger ones. Not sure what I'm going to do as to the dash...hopefully something cool, lol. The wheels are spinning ;)

Thanks EZ, I think I know that product now that you mentioned the simulated wood side. Decisions decisions...

Azonic, yeah the tape should help it from drooping out...I'm gonna go with the quick-set JB on the small stuff as well, to limit{hopefully} any sagging

Thanks for looking VPMan...lol yah too close a look could damage ones desires. I'm in Madison Heights, but do occasionally use the 9 mile pier ramp...in fact thats where 75% of my fishing is done{Lake St Clair}... from the lower Detroit river up to Harsons Island{US side only tho, can't justify those canadian fee's } Glad to meet another michigander.

What kind of temperature limit's pertain to gluvit? How cold is too cold to apply? May have to cover her up till spring{outside project}. Though still plenty of little things I can do in the shop.

Hump day tomorrow, half way thru another week and that much closer to spring launch...hope that cheered you up :p

Hull looks to be in great shape. I prolly wouldn't try to mess with Gluvit till it gets warmer if you're outside. Don't throw your old deck boards away. Use them for templates. Much easier than measuring.

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

When I looked at your boat....... I was just curious....my SC 18 offshore has the deck stripped and new pieces cut..but I am trying to figure how to drill holes in the deck......to match the holes in the ribs and stringers..... as my deck pieces dont exactly match the ones I used as templates....what are your plans ? I can't tell from your pics if your ribs have two holes each as do mine. Also I plan to rivet the alumin cross pieces first .....then rivet the deck to the ribs..... I don't know if thats the right order of assembly .... or not. I hope to pick-up some more tips on iboats from yours and others restorations.

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Thanks for the reminder EZ!

Hey Sling, not sure on how others go about it, I currently plan to make marks on the hull sides as reference's... I am going to use screws on mine and place a tad further towards the centerline{to reach fresh meat so to say}

here's the mess mine are in {nothing uniform to say the least}

thats exactly what I did Kenny..
It was going to be covered by the side panels so I sharpied each side up the gunnels...

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

This looks like a great project! I can't believe you got that much boat/trailer for 350$, but it sounds like you did your research..

If you haven't found a good way of plugging those hulls you might want to look into this product:

http://www.durafix.com/

It should be pretty strong, and I've heard of people using it to fix pretty much anything aluminum. The video is definitely worth checking out as well. A guy punches about a half inch hole in an aluminum can and then patches it with a torch in less than 10 seconds.

Good luck!
