1962 Gale Buccaneer 5hp Help???

Hello to everyone-

I just purchased 3 motors one of which is this Gale, it is the best of the bunch. It is model number 5D20B and serial number 830919.

This is my very first motor ever purchased.

The current speed setting is slow and mixture is set to rich and then there is the choke knob as well. It starts right up after giving some choke and opening the throttle half-way.

However, while underway it sometimes seems like it slips out of gear but I don't hear anything or feel anything it just kind of stops propelling while still running and eventually shuts off.

I has also just shut off while underway.

I know it could be more reliable than it currently is. I'm just not sure at this point how to get it running better.

Anyone know where or how to find a repair manual?

I'm currently reading Peter Hunn's 'classic outboard motor handbook' to try to learn something.

I have never worked on any kind of motor, but would like to learn and get this one running strong again.

If anybody knows of any suggested readings or other helpful information for the mechanically challenged I would appreciate it.

Cheers,

Re: 1962 Gale Buccaneer 5hp Help???

Hey Hopin!

I have a few Buccaneers and other Gales, mostly from the fifties. I like them, and as you probably found out from reading Mr. Hunn's book, the have a lot in common with motors from sister divisions Evinrude and Johnson. I'm no expert mechanic though, most are just sitting and waiting for me to fix them up.

I think '62 was still in the era of OMC motors that you should always visually inspect the coils. If original, they are usually either bad or failing. If you see big cracks in the plastic shell, that's a dead give away. Coils are pretty cheap and easy to change. Take a look at the ignition first, including setting the points.

Not sure what's going on with the lack of propulsion, could be a slipping hub? Other readers could probably diagnose that better than I. I'm wondering if one or both coils fail when they warm up after the motor runs for a while. Although I would expect you to hear the RPMs drop as the boat slows.

You can order a service manual online, perhaps even at iBoats. You can download a parts manual for the Eaton's Viking version of the same motor here:
http://www.richardlpaquette.ca/vikingmanuals.htm

You want the 5D20V manual.

Should still be able to get basic parts, and they are good motors. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for the help.

From reading, it does seem like there is a lot in common compared to E/J.

If I'm not able to locate a manual for Gale, do you know if it is possible to substitute, for example, a Johnson Sea Horse manual of the same year?

Thank you,
Hopin

When it speeds up, then shuts off---after it shuts off, is it tight if you try to restart it? You may have a broken shock absorber in the lower unit. However the usual scenario is it tightens up and quits and stays tight.

Send me a PM if you want a manual.

Re: 1962 Gale Buccaneer 5hp Help???

Happy Weekend to everyone:

Thanks for sharing great information. I have already read through some of the articles on the duckworks magazine web site.

F_R it doesn't feel tight after trying to restart and it will start back up after the first or second pull.

I have not done any maintenance to this motor. Previous owner said he had been using it much of the summer and was last used about three weeks ago. It does fire right up, but seems like it could use some kind of cleaning or maintenance. Prior owner did say that he recently change the impeller.

Hope to get a few more uses out of it before end of season. Will need to read up on the how to info for my new winter project.

I'm going to take it out either tonight or over the weekend. Will post to let you know how things go and try to take some pictures

Thanks to everyone

weekend update 1962 5D20 Gale

weekend update 1962 5D20 Gale

Hello everyone:

Tested it out in the test tank Friday evening and couldn't even get it to start. It would just sputter and would never get going. It would only run if you opened the throttle all the way up.

Took my chances Saturday afternoon, got it ready to launch, pulled the choke out full and opened the throttle about half way. Started right up, I let it run for around 10 seconds and slowly pushed the choke back in. Motor running strong.

Did good all afternoon, only had one time where it died while idling and had a hard time getting it started.

Not sure if it is a timing issue or what, but when you let up on the throttle and try to idle or slow troll, that is when it doesn't do so well and quits on you.

If anyone knows any tricks to get it to idle and slow troll better I would be all ears.

Thank you,

Hi hopin,
The library is a great place to get info and repair info. Im working on a 73' sea king and learning a lot from all the great people on iboats and using tips from her.

<Not sure if it is a timing issue or what, but when you let up on the throttle and try to idle or slow troll, that is when it doesn't do so well and quits on you.>

BROAD generalization WARNING!

Typical symptoms of dirty carb/jets/fuel system. General sanitizing of entire fuel system from gascap vent to engine recommended.

Even if that fails to fix it you're ahead of the game by eliminating one of the most common problems in the gasahol era!

Have you yet checked the coils as Tim suggested in the initial response to your first post?????
