I just got this motor from a estate sale. It is in real good shape including the control box. The voltage regulator is missing , I have read through the forums, and see that there are a few options. Does anyone have the part numbers for the regulator? maybe the other options? or a work around? [I read something about a Harley regulator replacement.] Most of the posts were a few years old, so I thought perhaps something new has come up . thanks for any replies

I am in upstate NY. This motor has the electric shift and I am concerned about it running the battery dead while on the water. if it were the manual shift I would not bother with the generator. I am unsure as to how much draw the magnets put on the battery. How long could one use it on the water on just a fully charged battery?

I dont think that motor is electric shift. In the parts breakdown it shows a shift rod and shift lever, which would indicate manual shift. Sorry I was looking at wrong model it is an electric shift.

I think you must be looking at the wrong diagram. There were electric and manual shift versions of the 40hp

There will be constant draw of about 2 amps when in gear.

I thought they defaulted to forward gear when no power was applied to the coils so there's only a current draw when in neutral or reverse. ???? Or is that only the hydro-electric shift?

NO, NO---The RK models are electric shift and are not to be confused with HYDRO-ELECTRIC shift.---The HYDRO-ELECTRIC was never ever used on the 40 hp RK models !

I have been told that a regulator off a Ford tractor will interchange...

I will purchase the Harley regulator that F_R listed. I am thinking of mounting it under the cowl, but I am wondering about the effects of vibration and heat on that regulator. Also, I was just wondering what kind of time frame I was looking at as far as running it without the generator hooked up . thanks for all the input

Time depends on the size / condition of your battery.-------Consult with your local garage / battery experts.

And did whoever told you that say exactly what regulator off what Ford Tractor? I'm not disputing the statement, just looking for verification. I've looked high and low for a suitable replacement, without much success, other than the Harley. And yes, I did check Tractor Supply.

Ever see a Harley run? Talk about vibration! Mount yours on the outer shell and vibration will be at a minimum. In fact, that is where OMC mounted them in later years--below the carburetor. Needless to say, they were sealed.

Seem to recall my 1940 Plymouth had a voltage regulator that " looked " just like the voltage regulator needed here.----But we know about stuff that looks the same !---I believe that in upstate New York you should be able to find a used regulator for your motor !

OK, I finally got the Harley 3 wire regulator , I am assuming the wiring goes as follows; red to "A" , yellow to "F" , and black to ground . Then another wire from "A" to the battery through the key switch . Sound about right? If not please let me know, as I don't want to burn anything up or short something out. Thanks for all the help , I'm hoping soon to get her out on the water.

Check the "secret files" up at the top of the forum -- link to Mastertech's wiring diagrams. Believe there is one for your motor (including the voltage regulator).

Yea that wiring diagram is for as Johnson wired them new. As I replaced the regulator with one that is solid state made for a Harley Sportster , as recommended by F_R , I need to know the proper way of wiring it into the system . thanks for the reply
