So I'm thinking ahead...using 1/2" foam block to set stringers on and bed the stringers in pb...sound good?
waiting for my 10' sections of plywood to come in 😂

You mean get everything plumb using the foam block, then bed them in when everything is situated?

No im actually going to set them on foam strips and fillet them with peanut butter. Reading a lot of books sounds like builders actually recommend a gap between wood and stringers. Pb is ok but foam shims work as well. Haven't decided yet

PB bedding or using foam spacers, either way will yield good results. If you don't use PB, I'd Highly recommend you use a minimum of 2 layers of 1708 on your stringers.

Well while I have your ear...if I do bed them in pb how much should it be? Just slop it on and push stringer down till it oozes out the edges?

And be when you say two layers do you mean do the layup in the tutorial and then repeat it?

I use 1/4" spacers (Wood Dowel) to hold the stringer up and then use a plastic spoon to moosh the PB under the stringer and form the concave fillet all at the same time.

Yup same procedure just need two layers cuz if its suspended from the hull with only foam to support it could flex and crack one layer 2 layers should be more than ample. To be Honest if I ever did another stringer job I'd cut Strips of foam from the Blue sheets from Lowes and contact cement them to the bottom of the stringers full length. Then I'd PB the fillets and then use the 1708. I'd get full support on the bottom, with a little cushioning, and then only need one layer of 1708. But that's just Me!!!!

So when I lay these up...all I have is 1708 so the first layer needs to have csm side facing stringers and hull (down) and then the rest needs to face the opposite? Confused

The 1708 already has CSM on it's backside. That's what goes down first, the csm side at all times. No need for add'l csm. If you have 1700 then you're 1st layer is the csm. Hope this helps clarify.
CSM is always face down.

So going over everything I have 5 gal of poly resin and 5 yds of csm and 10yds of 1708.

That was was for the floor I thought I'd be replacing.
Any ideas how much fiberglass and resin for a boat with 4 stringers avg 10 ft long and 4 bulkheads? 😬

So I just had a fiberglass guy tell me that they use one layer of 1.5 then what they call 45....said in 40 yrs he's never laid straight 1708. Says it's asking for trouble. Any thoughts?

Yes here at the Lost City of Esmerelda. There are choices, applications and uses for all the various materials suggested. If something doesn't make sense you need to do research. 1708 is a winner I would recommend that.
Thats my opinion haha.:)

CSM and the old School glass is still used but a LOT harder to lay down and get it to conform to corners and edges. The 1708 is actually lighter but stronger, and easier for the beginner to work with. The basic formula for resin it 1 gallon will wet out 4 yards of either 1.5oz CSM or 1708 fabric. 5 Gallons Will NOT be enough for what you will be doing. 1708 normally goes down with the CSM down, not Always, but normally. The CSM fibers are dissolved by the PolyResin and this is what keeps the Resin more flexible and less likely to crack under stress. You never want to apply fabric without CSM unless CSM goes down first.

Thanks for all the input. This is something I only want to do once. I have a lot of anxiety about getting the stringers right and the glass right. I keep second guessing myself.

After a few days at it will become second nature. Keep exploring and asking questions.

I'm really nervous about the glass and stringers. Counting days down until I have the floor in and can move on to cosmetic stuff
