I have a 1964 West Bend 35 HP and am trying to figure out if it has an altenator or not? It has electric start and has a wiring panel on the port side of the engine that is about
1"x5" with 8 wires coming and going. If it does not have an altenator, why so many wires? I replaced the entire wiring harness, making sure I hooked everything back up the way it was before but when the motor is running and the battery disconnected, there is no juice. There are 3 wires at the ignition switch that were dead ended (not sure why, like that when I bought it) and I did the same when I replaced all of the wiring. I thought that maybe I was having a short before because all of the wires were badly coroded and I figured that was why I was not getting any juice. If it does have an altenator and mine is bad, where do I get one and what all is involved with taking the flywheel off? I will take some pictures tomorow and post them.

Per another post about the same engine. If the other guy is correct you do have a under flywheel alternator. I bought a harmonic balancer from autozone to pull flywheels with. Just make sure you are using grade 8 bolts or you may get a bolt snapped of where you don't want it.

If it does have an alternator and you ran it with the battery disconnected, you blew it (the alternator rectifier). I would have to know more about the motor in order to tell you how it is equipped. Waiting for the pictures.

I have tested automotive alternaters plenty of times by disconnecting the battery and seeing if it dies. I have always been told as long as you dont hook the battery back up while the engine is running then you wont have problems. That may not be true in outboards but i have never had a alternater tear up from doing this.

Cars aren't outboards. But I will concede that if the motor has battery ignition you MAY get away with that act. The ignition MAY provide a place for the alternator output to go. Many outboards have magneto igniton, not connected to the battery or alternator at all. Besides, cars have voltage regulators. Most outboards don't. Most cars use a different type of alternator too (field externally excited). Most outboard alternators have permanent magnets instead of field coils. They produce electricity any time it is rotating. Bottom line is if you run an outboard alternator on open circuit you are if great danger of blowing the rectifier.......AND sometimes other components like the CD ignition system if it is battery powered. It is something you just do not do!!!! Ever.

We have not yet established what kind of electrical equipment your motor has. That was the original question.

As an auto tech for 37 yrs. I have to say this is the oldest wives tale in the book. Worked great for generators though.

Im not sure how this is a wives tale. 5 years ago my moms car would not hold a charge. I jumped the car and disconnected the battery to see if it would run with just the alternator which it did. Tested the battery by putting it under a load while checking voltage. The battery would not hold a charge under a load and would go completely dead. Put a new battery in and its been running perfect for 5 years with no alternator issues.

Sounds like a great way to damage the electronics of the car.

This is a major don't do on modern cars. If the alternator spikes it's voltage, you are possibly looking at a PCM, TCM, BCM,radio, amplifiers, etc, etc. The battery acts as a buffer to stop this from happening.

I find a good old fashioned DVOM does just fine for checking alternator output....

Ive done some research and am on your guys side now. Ive never done this to a newer car only older ones. I must have always been lucky. From what i have researched you wont always have issues doing this. Ill never do it again because of that slight chance of screwing something up lol.

One of my auto repair "mentors" always did this too. Once I enrolled in Automotive Technology at SIU-C I became "educated". :D

The weather is great if you like living in a tropical rain forest. :( But hey it's summer (and) boating season so we're not going to complain too much.

Where on the "Banks of the Ohio" are you?

Small world. I've spent lot's of time in Pope Co. My bachelor buddy has a 40 acre farm near Temple Hill.

I could tell stories....but their not fit for iboats.

Thanks for the invite. Next time we have a "Fresh Frozen Peach Daquiri Festival" we just might come and visit the "Tiki Hut". :D

See Sasto, Tiki Huts just aren't in Florida. :D Come see. :p

Are you talking about me again, Swabbie! The closest I've ever been to there is Paduka and ironically my mates name was Duke. We loved that place. I told them to build a tiki hut and I will come! :D

Ha Ha, yes I am. Paducah is a great old river town on the Ohio, just an hour south of us.

If you ever get the urge, we will build you your very own "tiki hut". :p

I was born and raised near Temple Hill...I owned a 50 acer cattle outfit in Brownfield...spent many days and nights playing along Bay creek.

Fresh Frozen Peach Daquiri Festival
