Starcraft kinda of slapped these boats together. The overall engineering was pretty tough though. These boats were built to last. I'd like to see the dies to stamp out the stringers. Loosey goosey tolerances here and there and when it's all riveted and screwed together, voila an aluminum tanker!

Thanks John! I suppose now it's time to grow up.... nahhh!!! My Dad's heart issues are being cared for now... so that's is a really good thing. I have no doubt all will be great!

Ok. Just one piece short of finishing the floatation... but first... my little tiger helper was instrumental in ensuring that all piece of floatation were light enough to act as floatation:

and the other side (under the tiger) also layered in:

Just have one side under the bow to complete. Then it is floor and transom time!

Have a great Sunday fella's!!

Tigers are known for their expertise w/ SC flotation foam? Who'd have thunk it.... Maybe the key is using that pink panther brand :target:

Looking great IM. How many sheets were you able to stuff below decks? 2" thick?

Thanks man! Got 4 full 1" sheets + 1 1/2 half inch sheets + another 3/4's of a 1" sheet to come shortly. Not bad at all. I plan on adding additional foam later under the gunnels and up under the bow.

Hey - You didn't smear 5200 on Tigers head to get the foam balanced, did you.

Looking good Jim, Happy belated BDay.

Thanks Glen!

I have the trailer at my house now... so I can go shopping for some plywood shortly and get moving forward on the floor.

Quotes of the day...

? Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that, who cares? He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!
? Sometimes you're the windshield; sometimes you're the bug.
? When I die, I want to die like my grandfather, who died peacefully in his sleep ? not screaming like all the passengers in his car.

Sometimes some humor remedies the toils of the day...

Enjoy "Friday" gents!

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Hey fellas,

Picked up some 9/16 douglas fur ply for the floor and the transom. I haven't done the math fully yet, but for the transom I plan on sandwiching some 1/4" ply between two pcs of 9/16 to bring it out to 1.5" thick. I'll lather some PL Premium between the layers for a tasty little snack! :) 3/4" douglas fur ply weighed a ton and would be overkill for the floor in the Jet --- IMO. This will be fine as it is spanning about 25" and is fully supported with foam underneath.

Anyone remember the specs for floor rivets... I have totally forgotten.

Plan is to finish up the floatation tomorrow early am and get the floors/transom cut and ready for spar varnish.

Happy Easter Fellas!

Ok.... Some floor action today.

First got the flotation sorted out and sat and made Vrooom Vroom noises!

Then I got the first and second pieces cut and test fitted:

IMAG0813_zpse764bcec.jpg

I took some measurements --- using the maximum width (48") I drew a center line and measured under the bow every 12" and then measured across the boat to get the width. The circled numbers are the total widths and the numbers in squares are the total widths / 2. Here is the little template:
IMAG0814_zpsecba0072.jpg

I then transposed the measurements to the piece of Douglas Fir ply and using screws and a scrap of aluminum created the proper arc:

Cut and fit in place:

As usual, all cuts (except the ends) are 45 degree cuts.

So there you have it... floor is for the most part done. I have a little piece at the bow and the doublers to cut and fit tomorrow. Also, I should be able to get the transom cut as well so that I can kick off spar varnishing on Sunday!

Great day today and tomorrow --- so out to wash and vacuum the cars now!

Have a great day fellas!

Thanks Ez --- but credit where credit is due Glen showed me the idea --- I just used screws instead of nails and I used the old aluminum doublers... can't remember what Glen used.
