Floor looks real good Jim, nice fit. Have fun on the hike.

Thanks Glen! Hike was great... but prolly the last time for a month until things dry out... lots of really snowy wet areas.

Nice progress, may I suggest adding reel noises also. Zzzz, zzzzz, you know big fish on. Zach makes me net them for him, and I get to take his picture (don't forget camera noises). A big muskie was dragging him around the kitchen yesterday. What a goof, I don't know where he gets it from.

I'm taking inventory here. You have 3 boats?? Jup, Falcon, Jet?

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

A little more progress....

Due to a last minute change in plans... I was packing to head up north for Easter for a first of the season overnighter .... gonna be 50F today! We decided to take advantage of it! So...

Transom is made --- not glued...
IMAG0818_zps5338edd5.jpg

3 layers --- 2 9/16" Douglas fir ply's and 1 1/4" douglas fir ply. Using the measuring tape it's really close --- might be a 1/16 short of 3/4" --- but it's close enough I would think.

Front view...

So sitwrap....

Need to put a tiny piece under the bow
Need to cut the doublers
Need to cut the foam to accommodate the doublers
Spar
Screw and glue...
Rock and roll!!

Have a great couple of days fellas!

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

More progress this morn....

A bit of an interesting morning....

Started off well. Got the little floor piece way up under the bow cut.

Cut the doublers for the floor...

Realized that I was out of screws... so thought, Ok, I've got just enough time to get the transom glued up... Started PL'ing the transom pieces together --- remember mine's a 3 pc this time. I had to make a little trowel of sorts --- misplaced mine AFTER cleaning up and organizing the garage...
IMAG0820_zps0d125431.jpg

So, glued the middle 1/4" section to the front piece and remember that I need to glue a little mirror back onto my bike helmet. So I lathered up the front side of the back 9/16" piece of the transom... put a dab of PL on the helmet to glue the mirror on, used a plastic clamp to hold it and as I am picking up the already laminated section (9/16" + 1/4") pc of the transom to fuse it with the newly lathered up pc, the clamp snaps and explodes across the garage!! I'm thinking... am I under attack? What the heckla has happened? So, I walk over to the bike helmet and sort things out, get a new clamp, re-attach the mirror and get back to getting the transom sandwich completed. Except for one thing... for some reason, (age probably is a factor here...) I for some silly reason, glue the two 9/16" pcs together! Man what a dummy!!!

So... after a couple of choice words that rhyme remarkably with "hit", I unattached them and sandwich the 1/4" board between them. Problem is that now I've got PL all over the back side of the transom board.... tried cleaning it off. No go.. or really no goo... what a mess. So, I resolved myself to the fact that it's there... it ain't coming off. So I smeared it as best as I could figuring it's just another layer of protection. Final result all clamped up:

So there you have it... bit of an odd start to a rather odd day to be honest! Next up is doublers in, and I suppose some spar time!

Have a great evening fellas!!

Murphy found his way out to you hey Jim:welcome: I kicked him out of here after he plagued me all weekend. Did the alignment on the motor even boasted about how easy it was, then tried to put the outdrive in and it just would not go. Lot's of words that end in hit and head scratching, re-check the alignment and out totally, I had tightened the front mounts and not the rear.. Hope your day got better, progress is progress.
PS you can keep Murphy for a while if you want.:D

Psst Jim, might check the clamps....... Gonna be tough to mount the transom in the boat w/ a large compliment of permanent clamps....

Looks like it & the bow ply all ended up ok, despite Murphy mucking about.... Helmet mirror turned out _______ ????

Dammit, Jim. You brought this all on yourself. Never, never, never clean the garage or work area in the middle of a project. There's plenty of time for that afterwards. Exploding clamps, flying helmets, inside out transoms, missing trowel - all caused by cleaning up.

Even with all the "it" rhyming words, it's gonna be OK. Except - Are any of the clamps PL'ed to the transom?

I thought I was the only one who had that sort of thing. Sorry for the screw up, I know how you feel! Otherwise, lookin' good, it's gonna be solid.

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Man you guys continue to crack me up!!!!:watermelon:

Well the helmet is hunky dory! It turned out great! The exploding clamp... it's been thrown out... Haven't wanted to go check the clamps... I have a feeling the transom MAY go in with the clamps attached... gonna need therapy for courage to go look!!:grouphug:
Wax paper WOULD have been a great idea! :).... but alas, I was still recovering from thinking I was under attack...

I let Murphy move on this morning... worked on other projects.

Back at it tomorrow... But I'll check the clamps some time today and remove them!

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Good news... clamps came off now issue. Will need a little ummmm sanding but no problem. Transom is US military grade strong!!! :first: Triple ply of plywood = 0 flex... so now it'll be sealing up time with this one.

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

wow, quite a story there. trans looks nice tho. just tell people you hit a run of hagfish and the slime covered your transom.

on the wax paper, it's still a good idea to get it out before everything dries hard.....i've glued a few pieces in place with exterior Titebond

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

yeah lol

I learned one important thing with the wax paper; not all brands are =

I buy the name brand stuff and it seems to be good, the cheaper stuff had less wax on it...

I also like to use the stuff with 5200, take it off to soon and you have a mess, take it off months later, and forget about it

PL will sand right off when dry.
