Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Hey fellas,

My apologies with the lack of progress pics... my family picked up the nasty flu bug and it hit my wife hard early last week and she only re-surfaced today! So I have been pulling double duty! --- make's you really appreciate that much more what your spouse does!! So, all being well, I'll get back to it this week!

Next up is still to do a light sand of the sides and flip it back over. I am going to get the Gluvit ordered this week so that I can lay that down next week.

Enjoy the week fellas!

Hey Jim, I was starting to wonder where you went. You and your family have sure had more than your share of illness this fall and winter. Hope your all well soon.

Thanks Glen! Yah... just one of those years... prolly just a result of the little guy going to big boy school now --- lots more germs and exposure! Hopefully, I will be able to remove the big "X" for plague on my front door!!

Been missing boat time in the mornings though! Soon enough!

Ok... Progress Update...

Managed to get out to the boat before 5:00am this morning and got some stuff done. Sanded the sides, transom and dock rash spots in preparation for painting later on (more accurately --- when it's warm!). Here are some shots:

Also got the rub rail pc's removed a while back and the rivet heads ground down smoothish to the side of the boat:

So... next steps are to flip it back over and get the Gluvit ordered and applied... then it's floatation time!

Not terribly exciting... but progress nonetheless!!! :plane:

Take good care of the wife, Jim. She lets you play with the tinnies and even eggs you on.

Thanks GA --- you are absolutely right! Gonna be a number of days --- the Admiral ended up in the hospital yesterday! Her skin had gone grey and purple and she was having a lot of difficulty breathing. Net net is that it is fully in both lungs and she is on uber powerful drugs and bed rest for 5 days! So... hopefully, this will get it kicked out of her. Nasty this pnemonia stuff!

So boat stuff is out right now as my days are... well... full! The kiddies are up early and ready to go... so I need to be on it with them in the early am as well. Maybe by mid next week or next weekend I will be able to get back at it and flip the boat over. In the mean time, I will get the Gluvit ordered and the boat ready for application!

Bad stuff, Jim. The Jet can wait. The Mob is ruthless but we ain't heartless. Just play Mama Jim for a while and take care of the Admiral/kiddies.

Here's wishing your wife a speedy and full recovery. I just got over a nasty upper respiratory infection myself. It's that time of year up in these parts. Here's to a speedy recovery and I hope the flu bug passes over you guys.

Thanks BD. She is feeling a little better today... still out but breathing better!

The kids and I and my Dad flipped the boat over today while the Admiral was sleeing... so at least when I can get back on it later this week it is ready to go.

Have a great weekend fellas!

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Alright... snuck out after getting the kids to bed and the Admiral settled... after flipping the boat on the weekend, I noticed that there was some oxidization on on the inside of the hull mostly in the 2nd last and 3rd last section --- not the last section where the 3 knee braces are. I poked around with a screw driver and sure enough there were a number of corroded spots --- most were no more than surficial marks --- much like what was on the bottom of the hull that I sanded out. So good news there.

You can see the marks in the following shot:

IMAG0694.jpg

However, there were lets say 20 or 30 that were a little deeper --- but none were through or even close. So what I did was give the whole inside a quick light wash and then used Sonus polish and sealant to temporarily prevent further oxidization. The plan is to etch the 2nd, 3rd and 4th sections and then Gluvit the sections (along with all the other seams of course). Idea being that if it is sealed from the air then in theory, any further corrosion should cease.

What is your guys thoughts?

Another note is I really like the following heater...

The temp outside is:

But the temp inside is a nice working temp of:
IMAG0695.jpg

Not bad... and the nice part is that it costs in and around $45 a month to run. Kerosene would be a lot more and I would be always heating the garage up from a cold temp as well... nice to walk out and it is nice and toasty! Just thought I would share that with you guys!

Have a great evening.

Morning Jim, sounds like a plan for the corrision pitting. You will just have to make sure to use a mild acid of some kind to make sure you get the Sonus off so the Gluvit will adhere. Glad to see you came up with an economical way to heat the garage, hope it can keep up in the Arctic blast that just went through. Good news is we are on a warming trend here again, so you should see it in week or so. Yesterday morning it was -24c with a windchill of -34
