took it out again, this time with new everything in the carbs, put new floats in and did nothing but stick and flood out the bottom carb that is, could not get full rpms out of it, fixed flooding, adjusted idle mix over and over again with little effect? i was very low on fuel and was headind back to dock and i noticed as it did run out!!! of fuel the rpms picked up and took off well over 5 grand but for a very breif sec, could it be getting to much fuel in the carbs at one time? it takes a long time to get up the rpms and peeks at around 4500.
seems to take longer to plane, no zip, it'll run good once and then i have to fight with it, just to get it to run so so, i feel more like a mechanic on water than enjoying it, it wants to run good but i just don't know what else to do for this old girl but put her to sleep.....
at my wits ends

Hello
you almost had it :) .
now you know the engine is running to rich. lower the fuel level in the fuel bowls. if your still flooding there is still a carb problem. the fact that you hit 5k plus while running out of gas indicates an over rich condition. dont try that much or you will repair damaged pistons as well as fixing the carbs :)
good luck and keep posting

When you put the new floats in...are you sure the spring did not catch on the Needle actuators?

TMD

Has this motor had the fuel pump checked. In addition to ill adjusted float valves in the carbs, a leaking fuel pump diaphragm can cause the cylinder that the pump is attached to, to run rich. Fuel pump rebuild is quick and inexpensive.

I just went through the same problem last week,heres what happened;
rebuilt the carbs and fuel pumps(you need to do both)put it all back together and when I pumped the ball ,gas squirted out of the top carb and gas was everywhere, looked like everything was leaking, would't run worth a crap, went back to the carbs, removed the top where the floats were and low and behold I installed keeper of the needle upside down,(its easy to do)put it back together and started right up,took it out and goy 5100rpm right off to bat,(it never got more than 4300).
Dont loose it just yet
It'll be worth it when you hit 5300 rpm's
( take my word on this one as I have twin 1100 on my pontoon boat)

pretty sure float should be level with the top
when you turn it upside down on that model.
good luck,
M.Y.

The little spring on top of the floats should measure 2.3 mm. No more no less.

TMD

martyt, sounds like you have bent the floats and the tabs a little to much in working on them. Sometimes it's better to install new floats and needles and start off fresh. All 2 strokes will peak on their rpm just before they stall because the best mixure for rpm is a little leaner than you care to run normally. As they say ,'they run best just before they blow up'. nevjb
