Re: Carpenter ants in the transom

Hello JS..

And your point is .. ?

"The damage to wood structures is variable. The longer a colony is present in a structure, the greater the damage that can be done. If structural wood is weakened, carpenter ant damage can be severe."

That is off the same site m8..

YD.

PS. I still stand with my post above ..

i was just trying to post some info on carpenter ants. most people think CA eat wood they don't.
i am a certified pest control operater in florida(one of the toughest states to get cert.)
i have seen CA nest inside towel racks in bathrooms as well as voids in concrete. carpenter ants are more active at night so baits are not too effective.
i suggested a non-repellant insectice that you can spray on a few that are foraging and will take it back to the nest and than transfer to the nest mates like the flu in humans.
another less exspansive insecticide in an areosol can is phantom. if you have an old lesco(john deere landscapes) try them or any DIY pest control store

just a FYI

Or you could just get them little sailor hats and have yourself a crew! Ha, just being funny... The point of the post is that they are a problem around any wood and especially if they are the precedent to a transom failure. If they are present its because there's moisture present and that means bad wood.

Re: Carpenter ants in the transom

I just went thru this myself with carpenter ants leaving a pile of saw dust on my boat cover.

It was falling down from the rafters in my garage. Sevin pumped into the cracks didn't touch them. The liquid stuff sprayed into the cracks did nothing either.

The only thing I found to slow them down was a 6 pack of aerosol carpenter ant fogger. I found it in Lowes for like $10.

It was for indoor use so I just set off 3-4 cans and shut the garage door for 2 hours. Started raining down ants onto the floor which I then sprayed with the liquid stuff.

Like another poster already said. Set off a few cans near their nest and cover it down tightly!

Removed lots of eggs and ants.
Foam was soaked, had the jiggle of jello feeling when I was pulling it out.

but I have a question...what should I use to clean the aluminum? Looks like deposits.

And the old factory seam seal, most of it was pulled up when the floor was removed. Should I just pick out the loose stuff and put the gulvit on top the stuff I can't get out?

There must have been a chipmunk living in there, I found a whole bunch of walnut shells, and fabric.

By the way, I think the drowning method worked but not for long. When the nest was exposed the eggs were still alive. And befor I killed the nest 3 ants hatched.

There is corrosion on the aluminum floor.

What do i use to remove it?

How do i protect it from happening again?

Using high quality stainless steel fasteners is one way to prevent corrosion. Avoiding PT lumber is another.

Well the previous owner had let nature take over and the chipmunks/mice must of brought something in that corroded the floor.
But the story how it happened doesnt matter, i need to fix it.

So should i hit it with some 200grit sand paper to knock off the corrosion?

Then i should i hit it with some clear paint to protect that area?

Is it by any chance under and area where the batteries were? We've definitely seen damage from leaky batteries before.

I think my thread fell to the bottom of the list, so i will post my question again.

Whats the best way to remove corrosion?
Just scrap it off?

Should i coat the spot with something after to seal it?

IMO I would not use PT wood with alum boats...

Agreed. When I finally got the PT transom wood out of my Jet Star that the previous owner had installed several years ago, I found that the aluminum is all pitted where it came in contact with the metal.
