Check out this thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=463895 member MichaelP makes and sells transom caps. I think he only makes one size but it may very well be the one you need. They aren't cheap but I got one for my boat and it fits like a glove and is very nice. Send him a PM.

Re: {1965 Jupiter Restoration}

had to take a couple days off from working on it as things picked up with my second job but im back to it this weekend. got most of it sanded down and ready for primer. the upper rails on my boat had tons of holes in it from idk what :( picked up some JB weld and some galvinized flashing to cut in strips to use for backing. is this the best method for filling these holes? i seen a few others doing it. took a trip to Lowes and picked up a few things also, cost me a small fortune :eek: i will have the whole boat in primer by tomorrow night. also picked up wood for Transom, ill snap some pics of it being made tomorrow at my uncles shop. Cheers..

Re: {1965 Jupiter Restoration}

is this the best method for filling these holes?

A lot of fellas use JB Weld (including me) and Marine Tex to get those holes sealed up. It's a good idea to get enough on to keep it where it's supposed to. I JB'd both sides so it's holding onto itself. Some of the guys use backers too.

Yesterday I sealed up about 30 holes just like you have there with rivets. I'll post up some photos when I get a sec.

Give EZ some thanks for changing up your thread title too eh;)

Cool cool! ill send him a pm. i went with the plan i had on filling the holes. put a glob of JB weld in the center of a square piece of the flashing and put it over the hole. its seeping through so when i get it flipped back over i will JB the top sides. heres a pic of her belly up with the primer. i still have more pics but there not uploading very fast. ill get them up soon.

It's always great to get to the primer stage. As for the patch on the keel there.....I don't think it would cause the boat to "dig in", I would assume that would have to do with trim position on the motor but I could be wrong. You can take the grinder to it and smooth it out then use marine tex or jb weld to finish it off. The keel isn't exactly waterproof so it doesn't need to be perfect. Keep at it!

theres also a patch on the inside right where that one is. its not leaking a drop though, seems to be sealed up nice, they could have took there time and did a lil better job it looks like. this boat spent many years as a river fishing boat. the bottom is beat up pretty bad. A friend and I spent a good hour beating dents out with a body hammer and dolly.

What motor are you running? My 16' Jupiter with the 85 always felt like it was plowing a bit. I think I needed some work on my setup like raising the motor a hole or two or something like that. It did not have power trim. My SS, in comparison, feels like it absolutely glides on the water so I guess it's setup better and it does have power TnT.

Re: {1965 Jupiter Restoration}

I don't know how I missed this thread. Man your kicking my but all over the place making excellent progress. I agree with EZ on the epoxy because I used exactly a half gallon of resin on my transom. Sorry if you already stated this but are you planning to do the floor and flotation? In case you didn't know; our buddy Jasoutside here is our resident expert on flotation.:eek:

Hey EZ im running a 81 Mercury Mariner 115 with TnT. it does feel like its plowing in quite a bit. i know you can raise the motor up and down by the holes but i wouldn't even know where to start.

Re: {1965 Jupiter Restoration}

MichaelP. Thanks!! yes i am doing the floor and changing the floatation a bit. i already replaced the floor a few weeks back before i went ahead and did the full resto, but i didn't seal the wood so i will be doing that. the floatation was all in really good shape except for a few pieces in the back. im going to reuse the middle parts and go back with pool noodles for the sides, front and back areas.

Its coming along great! And guys i work two jobs and 3 days a week are 17 hour days, the second job has been picking up so i won't get any more work done until the weekend. i have pics of how i fixed all the screw holes in the rails. i will post them up tomorrow. Cheers...

Re: {1965 Jupiter Restoration}

You would want the cavitation plate of the lower unit to be even to an inch above the keel. If too low the lower unit can actually cause drag... too high and u can get cavitation. Moving the motor up and down if the cavitation plate is already even with keep could help but its a trial and error thing. Most of the time this is done especially if the there is some sort of set back with the motor, I'm guessing the TnT is original or is it a CMC? The CMC would require the motor to be mounted somewhere between 1-3 inches above the keel due to the set back. Some more experienced people may be able to expand on this or correct me if im mistaken.

When i had questions about TnT and use of a gauge EZ gave me great hints... Here is what he said: "I don't have a gauge currently and haven't found it to be problematic. Trim all the way down to start, once on plane trim out till she starts to porpoise and then back in a little bit. Don't really need a gauge for that."

Hope this helps... Great Job! Good luck!

Re: {1965 Jupiter Restoration}

well i got off work a little early today and started on the trailer. pulled off the old bunks and washed the whole thing with a 3000 psi power washer :D got a case of rusto gloss black and went to painting. turned out okay but it has a few runs from getting in a hurry. :facepalm: Ehh its a trailer...

Question, why does this trailer have a break over option??? i didn't try it but it looks like the back half can be tilted up.

Trailer looks great all nice and shiney. Thats called a tilt trailer. Using the tilt feature makes it easier to load/unload a boat in shallow water or land.

Re: {1965 Jupiter Restoration}

Cool i was kinda thinking it was for that. ill most likely go with some white pin striping down the trailer, try and break up the black a little.

so last time i had the boat out i had trouble with taking off and problems at WOT, i figured it was something with the fuel cause the primer bulb wouldn't hold pressure, i had an extra set of carbs laying around that came off a motor that blew up a few years ago, so i went through them and cleaned them up and now there ready for install. i also got a fuel pump rebuild kit i will install later on.

I got a SS prop given to me also, i don't know a lot about props but my boat does not run in the proper rpm range at WOT so im hoping this one will help out.

Im running out of things to do while shes belly up. i cant find the Valspar paint hardner in any local stores. i could have ordered it by now and had it. i did get the splash well sanded and in primer today.
