Re: 1965 Starcraft Project *****GOD HELP ME*****

If converting to a center console it would be necessary to eliminate the center bench seat. Doing so would that create a structural flaw in regards to flex of the gunnels? My thought was that because of the 5"wide top rail, and the nice reinforcement that is under it would that be enough to support the sides?

In my opinion you are correct. Those wide gunnels are the structure. More similar to my boat than a rowboat type tinny where the seats are structural.

I suppose my first step would be to gut the entire boat remove from trailer flip it over and start to strip the paint. Does anyone have any suggestions as to removing the paint withought damaging the aluminum hull? Sand paper or chemical stripper or wire wheel or something that someone has done?????

How is the existing paint? Is it in good shape other than being ugly? The common advice on here is to leave it and just rough it up with a scotch brite type pad, prime and paint. That's all I did with mine and the finish is holding up fine after 3 years. Oh and stay away from that boat with a wire wheel. I made that mistake for you already.

Re: 1965 Starcraft Project *****GOD HELP ME*****

Hope we are correct on the gunnels because i realy want a canter console style. Now i think it would be nice to move the console twords the rear and leave a bit more room in front for standing and a seat built into the console.

As for the paint i dont think that i can paint over the existing. There are some spots where i can flake off and see the previous coat and the bottom has some rough texture to it like maybe someone did not prep it correctly and just used cans of spray paint so i would say there is atleast 3 coats of paint on there. So some type of removal or heavy sanding will be necessary.

As for colors i would like to do black anti fouling paint on the very bottom, white on the gunnels and a blue stripe on the very top of the gunnels.
What type of paint do i use. Auto motive for the gunnels and anti fouling for the bottom or just anykind of exterior or epoxy paint.

The interior i would like to see the gunnels white with black sprits kinda like a carolina skiff or just go grey.

What would be good for the floor? I was thinking carpet but i like the idea of just a durable non skid surface but with this type of boat i dont think fiberglass would be appropriate and i was figuring that if years down the road if it needed to be redone just plywood would be the best. But carpet doesnt strike me as a good choice as this will be strictly a fishing boat. Any ideas or clues guys?

Definitely no to the carpet. I hate mine. Myself and numerous others have painted their boats with Rustoleum with success. People have used liquid bedliner type products for the floors. I think Durabak is a favorite.

Why not consider a stick steering system like Tashasdaddy has done on several of his boats? Search the forum for stick steering and you'll see several pics that have been posted here. I'd gut the inside, do a leak test and Gluvit the inside of the hull, then drop in new deck and transom (unless it's absolutely rock solid), figure out my seat lay-out and put a 25-35 hp OMC on her and go fishing. Nice boat...has a lot of potential. Keep posting pics as you go along.

Dont think the paint is any good. There are areas where the paint will just flake of to the coat below. Underside is a bit rough. It looks like the person who painted it just painted over dirt and such. So i would love to get it clean and make it look all shiny and new hehehe... Well its back to reading for me. Give me some ideas to stripping the bottom guys. Thank again.

MM, I didn't see where you posted what model this is. I have the 65 brochure and would be glad to post up the sheet on your boat if you can give me a little more info. If you don't know what model, how about how long, how wide, etc. Also, looking at the brochure for 65 makes me wanna ask-Do you think that may be a homemade console?

As far as taking the paint off, I'd flip it and go at it with an orbital sander and some 100 grit or 150 grit. just be careful not to mar up the aluminum. That's how I did mine except at 22 feet it's a tad on the long side to be flipping:D

You could have that entire hull stripped in less than a day. Besides, you don't have to remove the original paint/primer. Just the loose junk.

Then there's always chemical stripping.....

No expert here, just sharing what I've done.

Might be worth seeing how much it would cost to have the boat soda blasted if you want to save some stripping time if you have little desire to do it yourself.

You could strip it with aircraft stripper and course scouring pads and rubber gloves if you want to go the gooey route, otherwise you go the dusty route and sand it off.

As far as the deck goes, definitely stay away from carpet. I'd go with a glue down vinyl floor at the least, but I'd prefer to budget for something more durable and slip resistant. You could paint the floor and then roll paint mixed with shark grip in the walk ways and any area you need some grip.

Lots of options for floors besides carpet.

Re: 1965 Starcraft Project *****GOD HELP ME*****

I have no idea what model it is. As for the console it could be home made but the aluminum cap and side look like a well made piece, not saying someone didnt steel it off another boat but it was riveted in place and there were aluminum supports attached to the hull for connecting it so i think it was original. If you have anything in reguards to a brochure by all meens post it please. I have started to gut the boat today. I took the console and all the wiring out of the boat and tomorrow i need to clean the garage so i can bring her in and flip her onto the stands and get cracking with stripping the hull. I will post more pics as soon as i get her gutted and we can see what the ribs look like. from what i have seen so far they look pretty good but a good hosing and wash out will reveal all. Wish me luck. thanks again gents.

Oh yeah the boat measures 14' and is 5'2 at its widest point. It is rated for 4 persons and a max hp of 40hp.

Re: 1965 Starcraft Project *****GOD HELP ME*****

Yeah i have been searching for a motor. Almost had one but a guy bought it because he contacted the guy like 5 minutes before me. So the hunt is still on. If any of you guys have one you could sell me (or donate) i would appreciate it. Drop me a line because i am dead in the water here till i get a motor. I wont be able to start the rebuild till i know if i can get a remote motor or a tiller. Hopefully a remote with controles attached. I think the design will be realy cool for this little boat and it will help balance the boat when i am by myself. I only have 3 months to complete and test this boat before my big camping trip to chesapeake bay. Please guys try to help me find a cheap motor. I am starting to get a bit desperate. I dont think anything smaller then a 20hp will do? Do any of you know what the minimun i should use is? I think i can get a 9hp but not sure if it will run it good on the bay. Tell me your thoughts. Thanks again.

Here's the pics of my restore as promised. This is a 1988 Greger 16' alum side console. Poor thing sat unprotected since 1992. I have approx 100 hours invested in just cleaning and finishing the hull, so get yourself prepared to spend a lot of time on yours.

and a couple more.

Right now I'm laying in the decking and starting on the storage compartments. I'm keeping a record with pics and I'll be posting them as well. Hope all this helps you out some.

Wow thanks for all the pics. Looks like your doing an awsome job. Great pics too. I am going for a full paint job and i am wondering what type of paints to use. IE: Primer, Finish and do i need to clear coat it when all painted. I dont want the paint rubbing off from launching from a bunk/roller trailer. Oh what to do, that is the question.:confused:
