Hey MrMarine, Just wanted to say that I just read your thread and that will be a really sharp fishing boat when you are done.
I would love to find me an old classic like that to restore, but I guess I better finish the one I am working on now:D
Any way I will be keeping up with your thread. Sorry tips for you right now but I do not really have any experience with aluminum boats. I will offer any help I can though. I am however quickly becoming a professional in removing rotten wood.(LOL):D
Again nice boat!

Hey Reelfishin.. I actually have a title for it and it says 1965 but as with the year ther is no hull ID to go buy just pics like yours. Maybe it is a 67 but who knows. Liek i said if ya can scan it and send it to me that woul help a lot and anything you may have of a 65 age that looks similar. There is a lot of things i can go by in the pics but i need to try and find something in the 65 range to compare it to. Thanks.....

MM, check your pm's. I couldn't find anything in any of my brochures that match your setup until 67 either. Looks like you're well on your way to putting together a nice rig!

Re: 1965 Starcraft Project *****GOD HELP ME*****

Well today is going great. I cut and shaped all the wood for the transom. Sanded the rear of the boat so i can prime it before bolting the new wood in place. Wow there was a lot of paint drips from the previous 4 or 5 coats. LOL.

I have decided to definately coat the interior of the transoms aluminum face with the rubber coating before i put the new wood to seal it from water leaking in there, and the floor up to the first rib. Yes i will be careful not to get any in the weep hole under the rib.:D

So now i am going to take a break and go get all the new stainless steel bolts and the etching primer and the rubber coating. See ya guys in a bit. I will take some pics when i get back and post them.

Thanks for all the support guys. You are all the best.:p

Ok guys heres an update. I went to the store and got the supplies needed. I got back and went streight to work. I finished prepping the stern and primed it with self etching paint. Then let that set up then sprayed the interior up to the first rib with a rubberized coating (fuel, water and chemical resistant). Then i installed the new transom pressure treated wood. Installed all new stainless steel bolts, washers and the eyebolts the reinforce the the transome with cables. I even bought some gasket material to go behind all the washers up against the hull. Yhat way i am assured that the bolts and holes are sealed 100%. Now that the transom is replaced i am going to flip her over and start on the bottom. Here are some pictures sorry they are not teh best i hafto use my phone because my camera wont charge. I think the battery died oh well.....:D

I think your '65 is allot like our '67.

I appologize that I didn't read the complete thread, but if you have questions about what was original, let me know.

The original had a 2/3rd bench seat for the driving console. It was a fold-up that you could have some storage. The console looked to be at least part stock. They obviously cut the transom to fit a short shaft motor. You seem to be missing the aluminum stringer that goes down the center of the boat, to support floor.

Ours is 14' and takes a 40hp max. Starcraft also made the same exact boat two foot longer (same width).

North Beach

All i can say is full steam ahead and :DSPLASH DOWN:D

imported_John_S

I have the rib for the middle i removed it for cleaning.
I have the storage box for under the 3/4 seat. I am not going back to exact original but close to it. I am going to add storage to the rear and front. the console will be it the same spot but a little taller to accomodate a bit of a taller seat and a little wider for more stuff like fish finder and radio. The sides are going to have carpeted gunnels with storage openings. Yaknow John the more info i find on this boat the more i think it is a 67 i was just going by the title but that could always be wrong and changed by mistake over the years. I bought the boat out of NJ have and they are infamous for screwing things up at DMV:eek:. But yeah my boat is the exact as yours. Do you have a pic of the transom? Let me know.Thanks.

Hey North Beach this boat has to be done in just a few more weeks. I have to work on my popup camper for our camping trip to chesapeake bay for the 4th of July week. So yeah i am going mad crazy at this.:D

Mr Marine,

First time checking this project.

What a cool craft! I dig the conversion to center console idea.

Crazy cool find on the engine! What a beaut!

I swear I'm tryin to keep track of like 20 resto threads simultaneously.

I look forward to your progress! Great work on the transom!

Re: 1965 Starcraft Project *****GOD HELP ME*****

Starcraft made these boats for a number of years. I have seen numerous and they all had that light green color (before any user painting). My neighbor, two houses up, has the 16'er version. It wouldn't surprise me if they did make them in '65. I am going by our boat registration for the year, as well. But, given that my father bought it new, not much chance it was messed up by DMV. I haven't examined the model/serial number to see if the year was used.

I have the boat in the garage. Just did the annual spring top-coat of paint to the deck. Also adding that 2/3 seat back as part of extending the rear casting deck. I'll take pictures of both sides of the transom and post this evening.

Transom wood is all original, except for the piece to raise the motor up 3/4" and the piece to give the clamps new "bite" area.

Re: 1965 Starcraft Project *****GOD HELP ME*****

Hey John,

Realy like it. I think when my boat is done we get together and take them both out and impress everyone.

Boss Hawg,

Thank you very much. I appreciate everyones support.

Ok here is the update:

Today i took the boat outside and flipped her over. Made giant wooden horses (boat stands) and brought her inside. Started sanding and removing all the old paint and found a lot of oxydation ( just superficial).

OK so now my dilema. I have become very unhappy with the outcome with sanding. I feel that it may be slightly to abrasive for the hull. I have decided to forego the sanding and swith to a chemical stripping method because i called a few companies that do soda blasting and they want from $375 - $500 depending on the time it takes and they both have 3 hour minimums for charging.

Well the budget doesnt fit that so its time to get stinky. Off to Home Depot I go.

Found a Marine grade stripper that is cleaned up with just water (I like that idea cause the rest say you hafto wash the boat with acitone after stripping). I tried it on a small spot and all i can say is Holy %^&$. This stuff is the best it leaves the aluminum looking brand new. I wish i never sanded some of the other spots. I have been stripping for about 1 1/2 hours and have about 1/2 the bottom done. I will get some pics asap and post them.

I truly cant believe how great the rivets look and how tight they are. Starcraft realy made a nice hull. Well its back to work.

Again guys thanks for all the support.

Great work so far..
The marine stripper..do you have to use any respirator or just open ventilation?

Even though the rivets look tight, you will want to do a leak test, and fix them. I had a few drippers. Two were fixed by tightening the rivet, The third was stuburn and needed some epoxy.

On the support ribs, clean out undernieth them with a butter knife. ie the center part of the bottom of the V, to allow water to drain freely to the back of the boat.

Are you intending on the turn buckles again? What size outboard? I'm not sure the turn buckles are needed with the rebuild.

Re: 1965 Starcraft Project *****GOD HELP ME*****

Ok here we are again. Another end of the day and another post.

As before i started strippin the boat with a chemical stripper and i must say i am extremely pleased with the results. I know a lot of you wont go there but i will say it does a smashing job.

As for the turnbuckels i am not sure they are necessary either but i figured that i would put the eye bolts in just incase there was any flex i could quickly install them without marring up the finish on the outside. I will be using a 33hp evinrude.

And here is a pic of a small area that i tested on. Now i cleaned it real good but this area took me maybe 20 minutes to do completely so i figured a full day to do the entire boat and the nice thing is there will be a no dirt or grime left to contend with. I bet you like the results as well.

Oh yeah as for ventilation. I have the garage door wide open and the windows open with the fan running. Also a respirator that i am using. But i must say if ya want a little tingle in the head just close it all and take a deep breath.:D
