If I ever repaint mine, will definitly go the chemical route. Looks good. Will you be using a primer like zinc chromate or other? I have used zinc chromate on outdrives and alum intake manifolds and it holds up well. Have you decided on a color yet? Any special graphics, shark mouth, flames. etc? :D

Wow. That is super clean. Nice work. How about coming over to RI to demonstrate your technique on, say, my entire hull?

Sure Matt. ROTF..:)

John, not sure. It will always be trailered so i am not sure what primer i will be using. I know atleast it will be atleast a self etching primer.

I am about half way done stripping the boat. I have worked about 3 1/2 hours on it. It is realy looking good.

Quick question for you MrMarine. I noticed you used pressure treated wood for your transom. Any worries about corrosion? Is that why you shot the back with the rubberized liner where the wood comes in contact with the aluminum?

Son of a *****. Now that you said that slbri i did a little research. OK well now that hasto come the hell out. Turns out that pressure treated lumber corrodes aluminum in a matter of weeks. I did not know that but i wish i did before. *%$&$ %$&^$&&$ &$*%^&% &^%*%^&% &*%^ one step foward 3 steps back. Damnit. well when i finish the bottom i hafto flip it over and replace the transom again. Now i am realy pissed off.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad

The only reason i put rubber spray in was to keep water from going behind it and protect the hull from fuel and oil spills. Now thats gunna be fun getting the wood out.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

MrMarine I think you are cruising along great! I hope I didn't put a wet towel on your progress. You certainly have my kudos to all that you have done so far. Maybe some senior members can chime in about leaving that in or not with the rubber lining you put in.

If it has to come out...think how fast you will be able to do it. :D

Yeah i know. Its not your fault your the bearer of bad news...LOL...

But i think i am just gunna replace it with some LVL material i have here. Its definately stronger then the pressure treated. I just hafto take the pressure treated out and trace it. It wont take half as long cause i dont hafto measure anything. So now i will be an expert at transom replacements for classic aluminum starcraft boats.

Ok here is an update. Not boat related though.

My wife was cruising craigslist today. And to my astonishment she cames racing into the garage and tells me to get in the car. WTF... i asked. She said just get in.

Where did we go? A friggen camp groud.. What to my wondering eyes did she do? Well let me tell you she did pretty darn good. You are looking at the new owner of a New to us but used Terry Travel trailer. :pIts a 1988 needs a little work but not bad at all. How much did she spend well thats the funny part. Nothing not a dime, free...... You read right It was free...:D... The guy that owned it left it at the campground. Didnt pay his storage so when he came up last year he just gave them the title. Now they were selling it last fall and someone wanted it but the didnt get the title back and they lost the sale. Well today they put it on craigs list for free and we were the first to call and show up so its ours. LOL. ROTF. It will be in the yard tomorrow night and i will try to get a pic or two to show you guys. So now i am redoing a boat and a travel trailer. Oh yeah its a 34' sleeps 6, A/C, New fridge freezer, Stove..Ect. Its a real deal for free. So now i have more to do on the Honey do list...
:cool:its good to be the king:cool:

Holy sh!t! As I was reading I was assuming we were talking about a pop-up! A friggin' 34' DAMN! Very cool.

Also, I am one of the people with PT "eating the ribs" in my boat. Like you I didn't know any better at the time. I don't think I'd even found iBoats. Well it's been 5 years and I haven't fallen through the bottom yet! However when I did my transom last year I used regular 3/4" exterior ply. Still, I think if I was you....if I applied the rubber coating pretty well....I'd leave it.

Ezmobee, Yeah 34' i still cant believe it.

As for the transom I am going to change it because i am too much of a perfectionist to leave it there. I will always think the transom is getting weak even if it aint. I have Engineered LVL material that is 10X stronger then conventional lumber and that is what i am going to use. I just know when i set the original wood the rubber spray was still wet and i did that on purpose to seal it now i hafto break that seal to get it out. I dont think it will be too hard because it was just done. Well back to cleaning the hull. The Shiny new looking hull i might add.:D

Wow, that is a great trailer deal! Just don't slow down on the boat ;)

If you are going to take the transom apart consider doing away with the cut-out. The PO just did that to run a short shaft motor. Without the cut-out you won't need the bottom board as well, unless you plan to over-power the boat.

"I have Engineered LVL material that is 10X stronger then conventional lumber and that is what i am going to use."

Well, not trying to be harsh, but after taking this apart are you sure you want experiment with something you think will be fine? I don't know if Laminated Veneer Lumber is good for transom or not. I have no idea what glues etc are used. While it looks strong there could be other issues with using in boat. Maybe it is an accepted practice and I'm just oblivious!

Re: 1965 Starcraft Project *****GOD HELP ME*****

Ok. Here is a quick update.

Its Saturday mid day. I have spent the last few evening stripping the boat hull. And i am glad to say that it is done. I went over the hull with 500 grit to just etch it slightly. I found this great primer made for Aluminum. It is made by Rustoleum. So i will go downstairs to the garage and start to pime her. I will take a before and after pic. Wish me luck. Going with the roll and tip method.
