when I get it done if you could show me how to drop this thing in the water.Never had to drop one in from a trailer before. Also never driven a boat with a steering wheel. Lots of firsts here.

Blacksmith....have you tried replacing the existing tip on your gun? also, i find that loosening and then retightening the setscrews that hold the tip in usually improve gun performance a LOT....i think that the contacts get slightly oxidized from the heat and cool cycles. ??

It was just one of those cheap pencil ones that runs around 40W. It's fine for light wires but just wasn't up to the task of 2 12ga wires at a time.

Well tomorroe I hope to get the controlls mounted and some painting done. Smoked my back again over the weekend . So I have been limited in what I can do and for how long. If I do get around to painting should I roll it or spray it with a HVLP gun? I'm thinking about rolling it myself. That way I can get thicker coats over the rivets.

I put on a second coat afther taking the pics and sanding abit. Got to say it came out better then I tought it would. So glad I didn't do it with a roller. I love my cheap little hvlp gun. Next is the top in darker blue, Then the trim rails in black.

Thanks Huron. The hull id tag says that I can put a 75 on her and Im worried that the 50 will be to much. The controlls were mesed up when I first got her running in a big tub of water. That 50 emptied it in a blink of an eye. So I know it can move some water.

Mine was rated for 85 and I had an 85 V4 on it! I don't think it was setup properly because it wasn't actually that fast. It did leap out of the hole though for sure.

The guy I bought it from said that I would pull a skier well. It's for fishing now. I might even make it an open bow some day.

Re: 1966 starcraft

There is a guy on this site that has a 16' Starcraft with a 65hp Merc of the same vintage and he got into the mid 30s I believe. Mercury was known for being conservative on the HP rating compared to OMC.

My 80hp at 100% would get my 16' over 40mph probably. Sadly I have not ever run it 100% due to bad compression and possible carb issues.

I wouldn't worry about the 50 being too much, that will be a great motor and more efficient on fuel:)

Re: 1966 starcraft

From what I have read the 13p and my motor should push the boat between 30-38mph. just saw a merc650 on clist for $100 motor froze up from being stored on it's side for a few years. I was realy thinking about making an offer, but now my wife and I are going to be down to one pay check thanks to congress. for who knows how long.

Re: 1966 starcraft

So what you are saying is that I should buy the motor and fill the cylenders with oil and try to turn it over?

Re: 1966 starcraft

Its a thought. However you may not want to buy a non runnin motor. I thought there was a boat involved also. My mistake. A non running motor could be a parts only thing and you sure do not want that.

Re: 1966 starcraft

Talked to the guy. He said that at one time it did turn over by hand but he has never heard it start. Now its froze up and no controlls. So I think it's going to be a no-go.
