I’m not seeing a shift rod o ring in the parts diagram for some reason. Going to rip it all apart and start fresh as was suggested.
thanks again for all the help. 👍

What a mess...I have a different motor, but on mine there is an oil seal for the gear case under the water pump housing.
Mine has one as well. I replaced it when I did the water pump. Going to rip it all down.

This is the oil seal I was thinking of. Its not part of the water pump kit for my motor. Good luck on the tear-down, and post pics of your procedure and what you find.

Greetings
I’m making progress thanks to your advise.
quick question.
I replaced the shift rod -O- ring on the top.
I believe this is where the oil was getting contaminated with water?. It had a lot of play when I moved it around. Is there only one O ring? Looks like there might be another one underneath the other further down in the case. Hard to tell from the diagrams. Also is this the correct direction of the water pump veins? Directions said to rotate the driveshaft clockwise as you push down the housing.
thanks again.
stu.

Use a bicycle pump or similar and put 5 or 6 lbs of air in the crankcase. Use a spray bottle with soapy water to locate leaks.

I've got nothing to add that hasn't already been said. But man that's a nice looking boat. Someone sure loved that thing. You will have a lot of fun reliable times with that thing if you get the motor dialed right. Pretty sweet runner when I had one

Thanks a lot. I’m super excited to get her in the water for a sea trial. Motor is running great now. Compression is perfect.
just need to get the lower unit buttoned up and I’ll be on my way. I swore to myself I wouldn’t buy another boat, but I couldn’t resist for $800 bucks. Lol

Thanks for that idea that will narrow it down for me.
sorry for the dumb error -- gearcase, not crankcase. One way is to use a piece of rubber seal and the needle for blowing up footballs. Puncture the rubber seal and hold it in one of the drain/vent holes to add air. A mity-vac works well for vacuum test if you want to do that as well.

Ok everyone.
your thoughts on how it sounds and the amount of water coming out of the motor?
Is it cycling enough through the motor?
The bottoms of the two water pipes that fit into the water pump and lower unit were buggered up some. I straitened them up as best I could. Water is warm coming from the telltale hole. Just don’t want to sea trial it without enough water. Thank everybody for all your precious advice. I wanted to send a 5 second video but it says file too large. Was shot with my Iphone?
stuart.

Your picture shows plenty of water discharge....BUT how are you supplying water to the motor? Running out of the water on muffs or flusher proves little on those sophisticated cooling systems. Get it in the lake.

Ahhh I didn’t think of that. That makes sense. I watched a few videos of them running. That’s what made me worry originally . They were pumping much harder. I will give an update after my sea trial. I am however making slow progress on freeing up my steering. Any thoughts? It’s all original to the boat and motor.
Thank you very much.

There's a tonne of forms on here and the internet about adding a "pee hole" or "tell tale" to these older motors that never had them. Basically finding a spot in a water jacket, drilling and tapping it for a little pip thread nipple and running a little 1/8 I'd hose off it out the bottom of the cowl. Totally worth it. I mean its never saved me but it's pice of mind. Or if you want to be reall fancy you can do basically the same thing and run it to a 0-5 or 10 psi pressure gage on the dash. Can even wire up a warning light to kick on if it drops below 1 psi with some gages. (Don't ask for a part number for that, had it in a buddys boat a while ago). Just a thought if your worried about keeping tabs on water pressure since you can't see that motor pumping from the drivers seat
