alright, new transom glassed together with 1.5oz CSM between the 3 layers. I did not take any new pics as they look like the others but this time they are not staggered but lined up all around like it was supposed to be the first time. whoooo hooo.............

Major milestones finally achieved. Pics to follow tomorrow.

I finally have the transom installed. PB all around the edges and filleting done. One layer of 1708 tabbed around 3 edges and then i ran out of steam. Might have some grinding to do to fix some air bubbles and then patch. hopefully tomorrow i will be able to get the second layer of 1708 all tabbed in and 2 layers of 1708 over the face of the transom. This weekend hopefully i will be able to get the motor stringers and stringers in place and filleted and hopefully 1 layer of CSM 1 layer of 1708 then a cap over the tops of the stingers to finish the stringers off.... whew........that is a lot to get completed by the end of Sunday, but that is the goal.

ok, so the picture of the transom that i did not get posted before of the transom glassed in place finally.

It looks like there are air pockets on the port side but it is actually just the glare.

In case everyone is not aware, EYE protection is VERY important. My son was helping yesterday and as we were getting everything together to start our work he grabbed the syringe withe the MEKP that was empty. Some how, not sure how, he slipped and threw his arms up. in the process the what ever little residue there was left in the syringe there was enough to get a little into each eye. He was blinded for about a minute until i was able to drag him to the hose and flush his eyes out for 15 minutes then off to the emergency room. Talk about a scare hearing your kid say he cant see and it burns. now he wears the goggles and respirator before we leave the garage to get near the boat. I always wear my full face respirator when working on anything and now he understands why. I am thankful to God that he is ok and there are no lasting negative effects.

if you did not know MEKP is caustic and will cause blindness.......... Be very conscience guys about your safety gear at all times.

now onto the stingers........

I routed the top edges to help the glass lay over the top, we will see how well that works out. Also put 2 coats on all sides of the stingers and motor mount stingers as well. Cut out some water ways for drainage and then glassed the cut outs with one layer of 1.5oz CSM and one layer of 1708. I figured this would be easier than some of the other ways i have seen here on Iboats.

This is the knee brace with the drainage cutout

Here are the stingers finally installed and filleted in with PB and a 1/4" piece of the pink insulation foam underneath them.

Next up is to grind them smooth just in case then 1 layer of 1.5oz CSM then 1 layer 1708, followed by a 1.5oz CSM and 1708 for the cap of the stringers. Then it is bulkheads to cut, fit and install.

The hard part is figuring how far apart the motor mount stingers need to be apart and to make sure where to install the aluminum angle bracket and how high on the stinger it needs to be. the install instructions from the manual is not all that clear. Anyone have helpful suggestions on figuring this part out?????????????????

Re: 1967 IMP Aztec -- Resto Underway again Suggestions please

fillets were hit with the flap disc to make them smooth, was able to get one 12" CSM layer on both stingers and the front third has 1 layer of 1708.

check list still to do
* 1708 layer on the rest of the stringers
* csm and 1708 layer on stringer to transom
* install new transom drain tube
* cut out new bulkheads and wings
* cut out template of floor
* figure out where to place motor mount stingers and plate with nuts welded to it for backer
* Possibly get more resin, almost out but the weather may not be nice enough to do any more glassing. will have to see.

might be done for the season for now due to temp change and ability to glass because of lower temps. anyone know what the lowest temp is that is safe to continue to glass in?

wish i could report more, but the rain and cold weather has not been very good to continue glassin' so i have shifted projects for now. hopefully we will get some warmer weather for a few days and i can get some more work completed.

What is the lowest temp that you can glass in and still have it cure and hold??

ok it's official I am begging now......... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE?????!!!!???!?!?!?!?

questions i have are:
1. lowest temp that i can glass in and still have the resin setup and hold properly?
2. will mixing it hotter help out at all or cause more issues?
3. When placing the motor mount stringers in place do i need to know where the X dimension is first since the crankshaft center line is what appears to be the measurement used in the install for the motor mounts height and distance off the transom.

All right, I'll play nice...

I can't help you with one and two, sorry man. I'll say with epoxy at least, the warmer the better. But, that is of no value to you.

As for #3, everything goes off of the X Dimension. I haven't finished the process yet, but here is my take (quick and dirty)...

1. Get the X Dimension
2. Cut the keyhole
3. Install the Transom Shield/Gimbal Housing
4. Hang the engine off the rear mounts
5. Run your alignment bar till perfect
6. Build the front motor mounts up to where they need to be.

I don't think there is any other way to do it.

You'd be shootin from the hip on those motor mounts otherwise.

Hope that helps man.

Cheers!:)

Re: 1967 IMP Aztec -- Resto Underway again Suggestions please

thanks JO... that is kind of what i figured as well, but wanted to get them glassed in with the stringers so i could at least try and close up from the bow to the last 3/4 of the boat with the floor. Guess i can still do that. Then it will be fix the stern where that big old round hole is sitting. more grinding/sanding for the that hole, the steering cable hole and the one i created

then fair it out, gotta figure that process out after i build it all back up again that is, get it smoothed out and ready for the gelcoat. Then i will be at the point to get the X dim and cut the keyhole. Hopefully by then i will have a donor also and will be able to use it as the template for the holes..... sigh.... this one seems to be very slow going.

Re: 1967 IMP Aztec -- Resto Underway again Suggestions please

Yah, I am sure it would be a whole lot more convenient to get them glassed in while you are in there doing all that work.

I wonder if you couldn't get close with them maybe?

I suppose you could post up over in the Merc section and see what those guys say about just some rough front motor mounts.

I have a hunch they'll say it's gotta be that order up there though ^^^.

Keep at it!:)

Re: 1967 IMP Aztec -- Resto Underway again Suggestions please

hey bud.....i just glanced at this one.........so i havent had time to go over it all.....

couple of things.......your cured resin looks fantastic....really nice color......that means good cat rate, and good mixing.

your glass layups look great as well.....little or no air.......i love it !

glassing in colder temps is something i love doing...

outdoors with out any assistance.....i think its 50 degrees.....(dont quote me...but im close.....ondarvr will have exact temps.)

to glass in colder temps...you have to fool the materials into thinking that it is hotter than it is.....i glass in - 10 Celsius....that is about 10 below zero.

you have to warm up the resin......warm up the glass......and warm up the sub-straight that you are glassing to....

warming the sub-straight can be done with a quartz halogen light.......they will get the sub-straight hot. make sure it is warm right through area...and not just surface hot.

keep the resin indoors......mix the gook indoors.....

cut your glass and lay it over the warm sub-straight under the lights to make it warm.

when you are mixed.....run the stuff out to the boat and go for it.......keep the lights on it....

the real trick is keeping the cure warm when it is coming off the back end....keep it warm to hot as long as you can......190 deg is optimal.....but 120-140 is just great.....this is where the glass/resin will get its stiffness and strength from....
remember......this is when the resin cure is coming off the back end of the chemical heat process......during cure.....let it do its stuff......keep the heat on the sub-straight around 100 by moving the lights a little farther away......

when i glass outdoors in the cold........i build a tarp tent over the area and use propane heaters and lights to keep the area warm.....i cat at a constant 2% for everything....and adjust the temps around the batch....
i have a cheap laser thermometer...and every 3 minits i am checking the temp of the cure for at least 2 hours......6 is best.

playing with the cat rates is kinda a crap shoot.....if you go over the 2.5%....you will cook the resin on cure.....this will be brittle.....if you go cold 1.7%.....you will wait too long to cure and be monitoring for 8-10 hours but it will still be strong.

i have done this several times........and seen it tested to the maximum......it will be strong

when i get back form work tonight...i will check out the thread further.....but great work so far....

Roger, I did a little research on this, because, as you know, I am in the same "boat." Not the answer that you or I want to here, but I think our man Jason is on it.

See, http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=302950 See post # 4 and following posts.

This is from Don S. and Bond-o with some good links embedded.

Thanks,
Patrick

Re: 1967 IMP Aztec -- Resto Underway again Suggestions please

thee is lots of tollerances for the height of the motor. the isolators that hold the motor mounts are three inches tall......so there is three inches .

you need only to be close... a standard place to start is four inches off the hull....

but the proper way is to find rough x dimention. it is actually easy to do......follow dons links....
