1968 55hp - Part Throttle Sputter - PLEASE HELP!

OK, my newly rebuilt 55hp has a running problem that really has me frustrated. It runs great at full throttle, idle and throttles just above idle. But when accelerating onto plane there is a 5mph range where the engine runs poorly - its sputters/misses in this range (it is a very small range of throttle), but if you just nudge the throttle a bit higher, it smoothes out nicely.

To me it seems like the issue is in the low speed circuit, as certainly when the engine is running on the main jets, it runs perfectly. I have taken apart the carbs (twice) and sprayed them out, with little benefit. Could the timing be off? Can this be checked safely out on the water?

The shop who rebuilt it is so untimely that if I drop it off there, it will sit for weeks, so I have tried to tackle this myself. They think it is in the ignition system (amplifier, but it is new), but I dont see how this can be, given that it runs good over most of the range.

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Spraying out is probably your problem. I have not found a spray that will successfully clean carbs. Advance Auto sell the Gunk Products carb and parts cleaner, 1 Gallon can. Strip the carbs and soak them for at least a half hour, rinse with water and blow out with compressed air. This product has not affected plastics in all the years I have used it. It will eat gaskets so remove them.

did you remove the jets and clean them. has a linc n sainc been done, since it went back together? http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680

I sprayed out the main jets with carb cleaner, removed the low speed needles and cleaned. I didnt see any obvious crud in the carbs...If the carbs look clean, could there still be something small in one of the orifices causing this issue?

The shop said that they linked it, set timing. In regards to sync, the throttle roller contacts the cam at the correct location (I checked it). Also, at full throttle, carbs are all the way open and timer base is against its stop.

Carburetors invariably have small drillings etc in the body. I you don't soak them or use an ultrasonic cleaner then they remain blocked.Clean them properly!

bump. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Can anyone suggest a mechanic in se MI area for this issue. Im stumped on why it runs good at and just below full throttle, but has a misfire problem in the mid range.

At this point, Im disappointed that I went ahead with rebuilding this motor! $$$ down the drain.

youve had several people answer your question, have you tried their advice? you cannot spray a carb clean. you yourself say it sounds like the low speed.

also you stated it was just rebuilt, umm did they not rebuild the carbs? by rebuilt what do you mean?

I have the same motor with the same problem. Here is what I found: There are 3 carbs each having 3 intermediate passages and 1 main jet on them. Only one or two of the intermediate passages will be restricted. You have to remove the carbs and remove the top core plug. You will then see the 3 small drilled passages. Verify they are clean and you can see through them with a flashlight. Make sure to have a new core plug for reassembly.
