Hi all,
I am a total newbie to this forum, so please bear with me if I screw anything up!

My question is:
I blew up my starter (Prestolite MGD4006 w/ 12 tooth drive gear) and can't find a decent replacement for it, so I was wondering if it would be possible to convert the flywheel/starter to the newer 9 tooth set up that they used on the 1969-79 motors?
I currently have my starter in trying to get it rebuilt, but they said that it may not be saveable, due to the amount of arcing in the armature. Does that sound right?

Thanks in advance for any and all responses!

the starter is no longer available, but the guts are. armature #383184, brushes 379991. they are expensive, but, not as expensive as what you suggest. you can get other part #s and engine diagrams at this link, follow prompts http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Accessories/Literature/

i found the parts available at ishopmarine.com

Thanks for the info, Dad. I never would have thought that the Evinrude website still had info about my old motor.

It is good to know that I can still get starter parts, even if the starter is unavailable. I did find a used starter at Twin City outboard (here in town), but they wanted $238 for a used unit with a 30 day warranty. I think I would rather spend that much on some new parts and get it rebuilt.

One other question:
Does it matter that on the iShopmarine website it says "Vintage part- special order"?

So what ever happened with the starter? I am having the same problem with my MGD 4006 and can not find a replacement anywhere.

I got it rebuilt, I found a local guy that did it for me and after some cleaning and lubing on the shaft, it works good again.

I dont think you will find a decent replacement starter, I would see if you can find someone to rebuild it.

Good luck.
