Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

It was a "portable" tank so I just pulled it out of there to fill it. It was held in place with cooler mounting brackets from Overtons. http://www.overtons.com/modperl/pro...s_Cooler_Tie_Down_Kit&str=cooler&merchID=4005 You could certainly put a permanent tank in that location with a vent and fill as you've mentioned. Yes it was from my Jupiter. I don't have a detailed rebuild thread for that boat though because the majority of the work was done before I found iboats.

Thanks for the info and advice :)

Moller also makes some permanent bow tanks. I toyed with the idea, but ended up having an aluminum tank custom built and put it under the splash well....wasn't as bad a as I thought, $300. I was kind of worried about having that much weight on one side in the stern, but it hasn't been an issue at all.

Bear with me as I have quite a few q's this evening.
1. I am starting to get ready to cut the old stringers out. I was thinking I would cut the heavy roving at the base on each side of each stringer and hope that the stringers come out and can be use for a template for new ones. What do you think?

2. Also, they measure 3/4 inch so I am figuring maybe a a good sheet of ACX or BCX would be ok. What do you think?

3. The center stringer measures 9ft. 2 inches so what would the best way to get the length from an 8ft long sheet of ply?

I will be using this method to bed and attach to the hull I saw somewhere here in the forums:

4. Also, I have to boat on the trailer, should I put a strap around the the midsection of the boat to help keeps it's shape?

5. Last q is should i put the new transom in before I cut out the old stringers or stringers, then transom?

1. That should be fine, just try not to get into the hull! You might also make a drawing of the stringers, then measure from a fixed reference point (maybe the transom) and mark every 1' or so on the stringers. Measure from the hull to the top of the stringers, that way you have a reference in case you cant get the stringers out in one piece.

2. That should be fine.

3. That would work great, but personally I think that is a bit of overkill.....but that beats under doing it!

4. Might help since you took the splash well out.

5. It is easier if you take them both out at the same time. I did mine that way and didn't have any issues. Just make sure you have the hull well supported. Might not work so well if you have rollers instead of bunks. I would probably put the new transom in, then the stringers.

Yep, I'm guilty of OVERKILL on building stringers. I have revised the drawing. I cover the stringers with csm outside the boat before installation and then tab em in with another layer of CSM then two layers of 1708 and cap em off with two layers of csm. Done!!!

I thought that was the one you had posted....Miss Morgan has 4 layers of 1.5 CMS....no problems and she has gotten a workout!

Arch and Wood - Thank you for the responses... Much appreciated :) :)

What about getting the extra 1.2ft for the center stringer as it is 9ft 2inches?

I would just put the joints on opposite ends, and over lap. I would glue and screw them, you should be fine. The fiber glass is really doing most of the work.

In prep for doing the transom before the stringers, I cut the stringers back about 4 inches:

I then made cut 1 in green with the sawzall (being careful not to go to far down), I made cut 2 in red and 3 in purple with a high-speed right angle air-cutter (making sure to only cut through the roving):

I then took my hammer and gave a few slight raps the each side, the stringer came up relatively intact:

Started grinding a bit but decided to call it quits for the evening.

Not much done but evey 45 minutes of work is 45 minutes closer to getting the transom in :)

Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

I hope everyone is having a great Labor Day Weekend!

I have a question on the new transom.

The old transom was 1 1/4 inches (two 5/8 inch pieces of ply). Do you see any problem on using a 3/4 and 1/2 inch ply or should I stick to the two 5/8?

The reason I ask is I have a really good sheet on 3/4 ACX and would like to use that.

Have a GREAT rest of the weekend!

I doesn't matter at all how you come up with the overall thickness.

Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

I have been working on my transom clamps tonight and have come to the realization that I could not drill a straight hole or cut a straight line if my FREAK-N life depended on it!  !@#$%^&*()%^&*()_

Going to bed. Hopefully things will be better tomorrow...

Yeah sounds like it is time to call it a night! When you start making mistakes, things go down hill from there!

Well I think I figured out something that will work.
I just could not sleep last night so I went back down to the garage about midnight.
It kind of reminds me of chopsticks.
I will post more on it later.
Off to soccer game #2.

Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

The "Chopstick" clamps are working. The test tonight was successful:

I pretty much screwed up on Woodonglass' plans and did not have the money to get new materials so the pics above is what I ended up coming up with.

Got the 3/4" and 1/2" ply pretty much cut to size. Will need to make final adjustments on Monday after the Titebond3 setups up and I take the clamps off:

I found some 1/4" round rod in the mess I call a garage last night and made a mixer.

I have no idea how it will work but will put in on the drill and try it when I mixup some resin/PB hopefully on Monday when I may glass in the new transom.
