Thanks Wvmedic, its not to hard to tear down things aint it. I will be power washing it this weekend, removing the stringers to maybe reinforcing them & replace the rivets and if I have time GLUVIT!! The way im gonna maybe reinforce the stringer is instead of having just an Z shaped stringer i will just put 2 stringers together to make one,,, kind of like an upside U and then add some ribs in the middle of the stringers. Just thinking about it, not sure if i will go ahead. But if i do i will definitely record it. Has anybody else added hull reinforcement to their startcraft?

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

Spent the morning chasing a shop vac from craiglist. It was 20 bucks and 5 bucks in gas. Anyway,, took the stringers off and cleaned up all dirt.

Than started my 3500 psi heated pressure washer. Yes my own personal pressure washer, they come in handy for all boats & car cleaning, love it. One thing i did notice that it wasn't that easy with the psi washer. Water would not drain fast enough therefore causing a lot of splash. I think that if i would of had the hull turned sideways than this would be a cinch!

Hull had so much dirt that I had to use a screwdriver to unclog the drain passages. Finally all the dirt out and as u can see clean as a whistle and ready for gluvit. Gonna let it dry tonight for tomorrow.

It looks sparkly clean! I wish I had a heated pressure washer :( My pressure washer doesn't clean that well. I'll have to stick to what rick suggested and some scrubbing before I can Gluvit.

I didn't get to gluv this weekend, didn't do much for that matter. So today i took the rest of the out drive housing out. Got to see how rotted the transom is, but will be attacked later on. OK, i wanted to make sure that all water drains leading to the bilge pump work. I noticed when washing the boat that water would take loooong to travel to the bilge.

Soooo, I used a thin screw driver to poke through the drain passages and u guessed it mud and wood debris stuck inside the hull supports. After washing the debris i noticed that water drained a little faster. I decided to open the drain by prying them open more, not hard to do just worried that it might damage the hull, but no problem there.

On the pic u can see the results. Now it drains fast or a whole lot better than it was.

Looks good. That transom should be a snap to replace. That hull has a decent V to it so it should ride pretty well in the chop.

Would you mind updating your profile with your location? We SC guys like to know where everybody is from.

Finally the gluving. It took me an hour to gluv my tin can. Though I used up the whole quart, im thinking about ordering another quart & giving it a second coating. Pretty easy stuff to apply and no toxic odor that i noticed. I wish they had a spray form, now that would make things easier.

Riveted the stringers! I dont know if you guys did what I did but I got little bigger rivets. Im guessing this starcraft had 1/8 rivets, well i went ahead and got 3/16 rivets. One size larger. I did have to drill but that was a cinch. If I ever do this again I would use 3/16 rivets with a 1/2 grip. This way it wont rivet above the frame. Had it happen to me and had to re drill them out & push down on the stringer to make sure it riveted flat on the rib. Any suggestions or opinions.?

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

Sorry guys that i haven't posted in my project but have been researching and been planning how to reinforce my hull and some other topics. After some thought and budget planning i realized I can reinforce the hull with rectangular braces. I started this Sunday morning. Tried different ways to make these rectangular braces with out having to weld, Will plan on a welder later. I tried the alumaweld brazing rods, they sucked or maybe i wasn't doing it correctly after a day of experimenting i just gave up and decided to go back to my original plan of just riveting the braces and then rivet them to the stringers. I was also thinking about JB weld but I think it will cost more that whats its worth.

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

It has been a while, but have had some priorities needed to be filled. But finally had time to progress. I FINNALLY finished my reinforcement of my lower part of the hull. All thats needed now is the wood deck. I will be adding rivet nuts to aluminum hull so I can bolt my floor. I want to be able to remove my floor every once in a while. I will be adding foam later, but will cut the foam so it will be about a 1/4" above the stringers and braces. Reason,,, when i bolt the floor it will create pressure therefore a more sloid structure,,or so my reasoning. Opininions welcomed.

Meticules work there bud..I like the alum supports between the stringers..
I did the same thing..But cut 2x4's and waterproofed them..then drilled them in from the sides of the stringers..

Thanks for bookmarking me lakelover.
Whats up CheapboatKev. Did u feel a difference on water after u installed the supports? Im wondering what kind of ride this will produce. Im also gonna reinforce the walls. I hate the twisting it does!

Nice work. Fun fact, those holes you worked on to let the water drain are called limbers. Another iboater referred to his "limbers" and I had to look look it up.

Now you told me about rivet nuts; new to me. Will look them up. That is why I keep watching this list, info, info, info. :)

When I cleaned out the hull I used my air compressor and vacuum simultaneously to clean out from under the ribs. I could not believe how much stuff kept coming out but now they are almost as clean as new.

Thanks for progress pics. Albert

Limbers u say? First time I hear it like that. Yes I will be using rivets nuts. What it is its an actual rivet, except it has threads where the mandrel is suppost be. In another words a threaded rivet kind like a wood insert. U need a special tool to insert this buggers. I will riveting this on the ribs of the floor where the old deck used to be riveted. Then I will use flush mount screws to fasten the deck. I want to be able to remove the floors once in a while or add a compartment. If need a permanent bolt then i will use loctite. Google rivet nut & u will see world of this fasteners. I want to say that its almost more fun building the boat!!:D .

Has anybody installed foam and then compress it with the deck to create force towards hull. Almost like a soda can, u shake the soda can & it becomes solid.
Anybody?

I really like the supports you put in. I used 2x4 like CheapBoatKev. I really didn't feel any difference in the ride. It mainly helped with securing and supporting the deck.
