Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

Love the holidays, not just because the days off from work, but the ambience it brings. Not just to see family but to experience their warmth, see the children smile & play while the grown ups catch up & drink (yes we drink but not drunk). I enjoys this little moments year by year. I had 4 major losses in my family with in the last 2 years 1 cousin from cartel violence in Juarez, a grandmother, my favorite uncle and Micheal Jackson. May they all R.I.P.

OK enough of the sensitivity, im glad to be back working on my boat. Had to do some garage cleaning wich im still not finished. Putting the bellows....hmmm, well im half way there. Right it is hard for me because of the order of parts installation. As you will see I had to take parts off again because I noticed that I would forget to install a certain part or miss a step. But this is part of learning. So in my attempt to explain here a ton of pics.

Had the gimbal bearing sit in the freezer for 4 days! I just didnt have time to get ot it. BUt upon installation all I had to do was TAP. Freezing these suckers works. For a second i was thinking that maybe my bearing was wrong or machined wrong, but after it came to room temp i tap to see if it would come out.Well installed. U cant see on the pic but i mad sure the lube hole aligned.

Used a heavy duty thick pipe cleaner brush to clean the flange of the bellow housing and cleaned with mineral spirits.

MAH006833.jpg

Installed the fork, bottom pin and then top pin.

MAH006836.jpg

This is where it gets frustrating. Installing is simple bottom pin and the top pin right. Well let me tell you. After installing the fork.....

MAH006839.jpg

I realised that you also need to install the steering shaft at the top. So after installing the top pin i had to take it off, put the shaft then install the pin or bolt (what ever u call it). good started to tighten but realise u have to aligned the pin. Took off 2 more times to align it.

Whew!! U still with me.

Ok. After In stalling the fork i started to install the hose & the trim sensors. In one hand i have my sensors & on the other scratching my head. i should of installed the sensors first!!! I was so into installig the fork that i forgot to install the sensors. And they need to go first cause to tighten the cap bolts the fork cannot be in the way. Well i got to intall the sesnors with out taking the fork but it was tedious work.

leason learned. Onto to the bell housing. Smeared some glue on to the ujoint bellow and installed it on the bell housing.

MAH006861.jpg

Shift cable, nothing to it,,dont forget the loc tite.

MAH006863.jpg

Next, water hose. Notice im installing it on the bell housing with the copper tube.

MAH006871.jpg

I just dont see myself battling it with the bellows in the way when the 2 halfs meet (bellhousing & transom housing)upon installation. So for the moment when meeting the halfs I will route the hose, then finish installing the bellows on and then just install hose rubber bushing and tighten it upat the back of the transom housing. Sounds like a plan but will see, might have to post a vid if this works. When reading the manuals it says to tighten hose to transom housing then to belll housing.

Finally the exhaust bellow. Smeared some glue & install on bell housing.

All right, now to meet both halfs & see how hard this is. Will post soon.:)

Finally finished cleaninng garage. Its nice to be clean sometimes. So now I had time to put both halfs together. Put the shift cable through first.

MAH006951.jpg

greased outside of cable so I could slide the boot easily. Tighten the clamp. Noticed I already routed the water hose. Nothing to it.

MAH006952.jpg

Smeared some glue on the bellows and mated. Ujoint easy not hard at all, but the exhaust its kicking my hash man.

MAH006955.jpg

I was getting frustrated cause I was at it for 30 mins & still could not get the boot on that lip. Im gonna sleep on it and maybe leave it for the weekend.

That whole outdrive looks like art inside and out. I'm sure you'd get some takers on the rebuild business.

You'd have a whole wall of Sky and Grey Goose. You might have to ask for livers as well. :)

Im just kidding on the business. I have no experience in this. Like a person with a toothache trying to start a dentistry. "grey goose" sounds like a lot of people like Vodka.

Yeah no kidding on the livers!!
