Hey there i started my 1969 85 hp crossflow V4. And it runs great i just recently changed the impeller and checked for compression and everything is good. I ran it on muffs for a minute and while i was running it on the muffs i was checking the controls so it starts in forward gear even though on the control its pressed in Neutral. It will shift into reverse and it will shift into forward gear but no neutral..as well i did check for voltage when motor is off snd key on for
Neutral green wire has 12v
And in reverse both have 12v
Forward no voltage
I dont know what fluid was in the gear box before but was dark blue and i flushed and filled it up with Type C gear oil.
I know these hydro eletric units are considered trash what not but im just tryna get a season or 2 out the boat and it switches from forward to reverse but just doesnt go into neutral. Although this is only testing on muffs idk if it makes a difference in water but when i was running it on muffs the prop would spin faster with increase of rpm which makes me believe its in forward gear when in neutral on the control box.

also another question regarding cooling does this have one or two thermostats? I read some had one and some had two im wondering if im thermostat is working. When it was running i can feel water running through the hoses the comes out the thermostat does that mean its working ? Both sides had water running through it
A third question bare with me I apologize i swapped this motor on a 1989 bayliner bowrider the steering on my force was through a "tilt tube" not sure if its correct but the cable ran through the motor and had a place that was threaded that secured the nut.. does this V4 crossflow have that same place i can secure the steeeing cable with?
I apologize for long write up.any help is appreciated thank you

I think the Hydro-Electric Cases are great, and very reliable.
Since someone put the Completely Wrong Oil in the Unit, I would be changing it again, a couple more times.
Yes the Case is in forward gear when ever the Engine is not Running, or when there is no voltage supplied to either of the Solenoids. It shifts using Oil Pressure from a pump driven by the Forward Gear, and should shift into Neutral within one Revolution at Cranking Speed. Even when the unit is in Neutral, there is often some rotation of the Prop when the engine is running and not in the water

It has One Thermostat.
Your engine can not utilize Tilt Tube for the Steering Cable, that didn't become available until 1973. You will have to get an Anchor/Bracket/Mount to attach the Cable Housing to the Transom.

A round of applause for post #2.----I agree , these electric shift units are well engineered, easy to repair, elegantly simple and reliable.-----Just not well understood.------Dealer gave me a 1969 model 3 cylinder unit the other day.----Said there was no call for it on his lake.

Just the lower unit.-----I think I have a 68 Evinrude " TRIUMPH " cowl somewhere.

So my lower unit is good. neutral in water barely spins..although i need a new throttle cable or the person who had this control box tried to rig something up not sure but the wire inside the throttle cable when moving the throttle lever just feeds in and doesnt pull anything. Im trying to figure out where to buy a cable in canada
And how this pin comes off i seen a couple of videos of it being a regular pop off pin but on mine its different.
