drop the gear case, water pump is at the base of the drive shaft.

Re: 1970 40hp Johnson water pump problem

New to this, but have been trouble shooting 1970 evinrude 40 horse for last 2 weeks which I believe is the same engine, and got it back on-line with out spending allot . Just taking things apart cleaning and re-installing, Either way we ran our motor in a large bucket and did not see alot of water coming out, first I believe there to be a thermostat this needs to come to temp before opening, allowing more water to escape out the hole just below the top cowling facing aft. Also a heads up I got a bit of oil in my bucket this concerned me but after talking to the peeps here, they informed me this is normal for our engines, but I still had concerns and water flow through the engine, so to ease my concerns I got the water pump rebuild kit for 28.00 vs. just impeller for 21.00 and changed tho feather seal and o-ring + seals in about an hour first time doing it. This made me feel alot better knowing this is done.

I put a new impeller in every motor I get and then change them every few years..they can last a long time..but it only takes one good overheat to ruin your motor..change the gear oil and t-stat also.

what hole will the water pump out of if the water pump is working? there is the big hole and right below it 2 small holes or will it come out toward the bottom of the lower unit?
