1970 evinrude 9.5 Wont Start

Ok - I finally got the shift linkage back together. Now that I have replaced the impeller, pulled the carb, cleaned / rebuilt it it's time to start it. I've checked the compression approx. 65 and it has spark and it's getting fuel but I get nothing - not even a sputter. No idea how long its been since it ran.

Any tricks to getting the first sign of a sputter???

What's your start procedure? Motor in neutral, throttle advanced, choked, etc.

Put the motor in neutral and turn the tiller arm up until it hits the neutral stop. Leave the chke on until it fires.

Yep - pumped the primer, choked it put it in start position and proceeded to give myself a blister.

What do you mean neutral/stop on the tiller arm? I'll go look at it and try again.........

Is spark strong,good blue color jumping at least 1/2 inch.If it has red or yellow its weak.points,coils,and the stop button often goes bad causing weak or intermittent sprk.

have you also tried to take a spray bottle with pre-mixed fuel and spray it into the carb throat? If it will cough like that, then you have a fuel delivery problem.

I would diagnose the spark first. As Bruce Springsteen says, "Can't start a fire without a spark"

The neutral stop is not on the tiller arm, it is on the end of the detent screw. Take the cowl off and watch the movement when you turn the tiller arm. The interlock hits the post in neutral and does not when in forward gear. It is easier to start the engine cold at the maximum throttle allowed by the pin.

In reverse, the pin blocks the interlock arm at a higher step.

I have several 9.5's and I was able to adjust the pin position so that I can move the throttle all the way to full when starting. Probably not the best idea to go around the safety feature, but on the 9.5's it makes it easier to start. Just make sure you are in neutral. The pin does engage when in reverse so all is not lost on that feature.
