Re: 1970 starcraft jupiter closed bow to open bow modification

Okay so a series of events led to the whole deck coming out. I noticed the glass was loose near the edges and pulled and it started coming up in sheets! I pulled 90% of the glass mat up by hand. Then i noticed that water had got between the glass and ply in some places.

I guess i done screwed up glassing. So it all came out. Im going to redo it this time with 3/4" and epoxy, no glass.

Okay the video was the wrong one. Ill post the right one tomorrow.

Ill post pics soon, my phone is being stupid.

Goody, this is my area. Andy, here are some quick tips/suggestions. Plexiglass...NO, Lexan yes. Similar in most ways but lexan will not break. That means you can use 1/8" thick lexan, which means you can bend it..in a break if you want, just like sheetmetal. You can get it in all colors & tints, dark gray or dark bronze, black, red, blue, etc. Plex and lexan are an oil based material which means paint will not stick. Maybe for a short while but it will peel off. Ever tried painting something after you coat it with WD-40? I have made bunches of windshields out of lexan like the one EZ showed you. Cost is around 7.00 a square. As a side note, you can make anything you want out of it too, cup holders, braces, doors, dash covers, etc.

when i get closer to that phase, i will definitly get with you for some help with it...

well i got a little done this past weekend, but not much at all before my wife called and needed me at home. I dont have much cash right now anyways, so im taking my time.

i know west coast willy used clamps to hold straight edges on place to get a nice bend, but i decided to bolt a piece of angle iron in place for it, and will go through later and fill the holes.

once i take the angle iron off i will bend it in some more, as its not perfectly vertical, still sticks out some.

Good thinking on that angle to get a nice bend there.

Wow, what a bummer the whole deck had to come out. Shoot this little mod has turned into a full on rebuild!

Is that a fuel tank I see sitting in the hull there?

I'm going to do a rebuild this winter....For me, adding glass to the wood only does what you found it to do. It makes it rot by trapping water between it and the wood.

When I do mine I'm going to give a liberal painting of oil based paint and call it good. My father did that in a boat he rebuilt when I was a kid and it lasted for over 20 years. And that was with el cheapo ply wood.

I've seen lots of very new boats with VERY wet wood because the coating of glass would let it get wet, but not breath enough to dry out.

I was considering buying a boat similar to yours (a Jet) and doing the same thing to the bow...It will make the boat much more usable, and give plenty of room for fishing too.

If glass is letting water in, it's a bad glass job.

It's just IMO. I know it's not the popular practice. I'm just not convinced that glassing helps.

hey everyone, sorry for the lack of updates. the last 6-8 months have been tough. i lost my job the first of the year and took a few months to get back on my feet... now making about 3/4 of what i was making. im not sure what the fate of the project is as of right now... we are flat broke. ill probably reassemble the boat as is just so we can go out and enjoy the sand bar this summer. ill keep you all updated.

Hey guys, I'm somewhat back in action... A lack of cash and time to work on it has left me with one choice... Reassemble with what I have to delicate any type of season this year. I have a few irons in the fire fight now for income, but until then it's budget boating. By budget, I mean lack there of.

So what ever became of the original windshield for this boat? I just stumbled upon this old thread. I have a 1966 Starcraft Jupiter and I am searching for a 1968 & up Jupiter windshield. My '66 windshield is perfect but I just like the later type for some reason.

I know it's been 3 years so I don't know If you will see this, but I'm actually back working on this project. I'll post some updated pics tomorrow.

As for the windshield, when I started working on it,it was at my brother in laws house which he has since moved out of. The windshield might still be up In the rafters of the garage. I'm going to stop and ask the new tenants if it is And I'll let you know if you are still interested.

Thanks. Ive neglected it for way tooo long. i actually have some free time now. I was working 6 days a week, 55-65 hours plus 2 hours of driving a day. now im only working 45 hours 5 days, and its 2 min down the road! Anyways ive been on a productive kick so i can stay out of the house as much as possible lately. did a few week rehab on my lawnmower and weedwhacker and finally dragged the old starcraft from the backyard to the driveway. I even started smoking a pipe just so i have a good reason to sit out on the porch all night!

I have some ideas for fully finishing the open bow project. Today I scored an aluminum side console from a jon boat that fits the bill perfectly for me instead of my crappy homemade one.

First I have to fix the motor. Threw the flywheel last time it was out and damaged the threads on the crank. Now the flywheel has turned up missing. I ordered the shear key i need, and found a flywheel on ebay. Once I know the motor still runs the rest of the project will resume. I need to replace the deck again from sitting in the open for 3 years. Im going with pressure treated this time instead of glassing ply. it rotted because of my aweful glassing job. I plan to use the pink foam sill seal where the pt will meet the aluminum. I think im going to start a new thread about the rehab part 2 that will encompass everything.

I'll be tagging along if that's okay. Glad to hear you're back at it. Life sure can throw us some curveballs. On the deck don't use pressure treated wood as it will react badly with the aluminum. Actually don't use any pressure treated wood in her unless it is kiln dried, and even then there is a chance the wood could leech caustic chemicals onto the aluminum causing corrosion. Woodonglass has a great recipe for a wood preservative that will seal it up really well. Allot of guys on here have also used epoxy, and or spar varnish with good success. The most important thing is to remember to keep her covered and out of the weather when not in use. That will help her last allot longer.

For anyone else who is interested in following along, I have started a new thread that encompasses all of the tasks HERE
