Re: 1971 16' ss

I have to say that of all the SC resto threads I have seen, this is the most impressive!
Alot of it comes from being a sheetmetal worker & seeing all of the work/ craftsmanship you have put in, & also all of the unique ideas you have incorporated!
I don't say I'm impressed often.......... I am impressed!

Dave

P.S. I think I'm going to go buy a 16 SS tomorrow, just cause this thread got me stoked on it!

Re: 1971 16' ss

Thanks, I appreciate it.

I've been pretty happy with how it's turned out.

Looking back now, I wouldn't have painted the floors. It's getting chipped up too easily, from crab pots mostly.

Amazing job! I'm both impressed and inspired. I believe you may have gotten my wife to go along with a paint job and interior rejuvenation on our 72 SS. THANKS!

This may have been asked and answered, but what is the weight difference between having the wood floor in it and having an aluminum floor in it?

Ditto on the impressed part, I'm a Manufacturing Engineer who's been a machinist for years. I've worked in foundries, fab shops, you name it. I make stuff all day in an Orthopedic Appliance shop so it's hard to impress me but I'll say it; IMPRESSIVE. Very cool, coming from a metal guy with rust and coolant running through his veins. Send this one in to the show "Gearz" and let Stacey David show it off on his show.

nah, man, then he'd be a CELEBRITY and unable to get any fishing done for all the boatloads of paparazzi following him whenever he launched. sheesh, the boat itself will get a lot of people following him around just to check it out...

I honestly couldn't tell you the difference. The one that was removed was so soaked and worthless it would be hard to compare it.

.125 tread plate is 75 lbs for a 4x8 sheet. The two main pieces are 60" wide and 50" long.

The Rusto isn't fairing so well on any place that has any impact. Rusto definitely was not lying when they said it can not handle gas either. (small spill that took out a fair amount of the top paint)

I will say though, that the boat is getting A LOT of use. (2-3 days a week of fishing or crabbing including fishing today and fishing/crabbing tomorrow)

Here's some action shots of the boat
This picture was too cute. My daughter on the right and a buddies on the left. Both needed a nap after a long day of crabbing/fishing, and weren't willing to give up the power chairs. =)

Awesome. I can really see the benefits of the all aluminum interior with slinging crab pots around and what not. Dammit, now I want crabs.

Made a top for the boat today out of a $12 tarp. It was version 1 so I didn't mess up on the expensive Sunbrella fabric I have.

There are things I'll do better the second time around, but I haven't used a sewing machine since 7th grade...so I don't feel too bad.

There is no end to the talent this guy has. Great job the new sunbrella material will look good when you get it ready.

My wife thought I was joking when I said I needed to use her sewing machine. lol

The Sunbrella fabric I have is black, but it's not wide enough (since they predominantly come in 54" widths). I think I'll sew a center blue stripe, since I have to sew in the zippers and stuff anyway. I think it'll look kinda cool.

Spent 4 days straight in the boat.

Wed & Thurs were Sturgeon fishing (3 & 6), Fri & Sat were crabbing (41 on Fri & 23 on Sat). A buddy called and wanted to go Sturgeon fishing today as well, so we went out.

Only hooked into one fish today, but it came out ok. ;) 7'2"

The topside paint on the gunnels is taking a beating from all these crab pots. I'm going to install tread plate around most of the top section that gets seriously abused, so it stops looking scratched up.

Aww geez, veilside's resto jumps the shark :D

Oh, phew! :p

This is pretty funny. :D

The gunnel tops on my restored 16 SS I used blue Natualex Vinyl and it really looked good was easy and will take a beating as will not let you slip getting in and out color is about same as the blue on there now. These were left over pieces from the floor.Just thought I'd suggest what worked for me.
