Ok First post. K just got this engine off ebayabout 3 weeks ago...been running it off and on for about 2 weeks.. its been progresivly sounding worse, as-in there was a metalic ringing..ding ding type of noise.. but not to loud..so i tested her out first time on saturday. turned her on reved her for a bit..still hearing the metalic dinging.so i tried putting it in reverse to leave the dock and the engine stalled. Tried it a few more time same thing kept stalling. so we manually turned the boat so we could drive forward. gave it a lil gas, put it in gear and went off. it wasnt but 40 yds till the heat horn in the controll unit went off non stop till i turned it off about 30 seconds later. towed it home and fist thing checked the oil in the lower unit seemed fine. dropped the lower unit. found the impeller frail and 3 wings broken off with another barely on. plus the little metal wedge thing that hold the impeller was out so the impeller dont think was spinning much.i ordered a new impeller today.

1. Did i mess up anything bad by testing out the engine with the broken impeller.

2. Is there anything else i should check on. So it wont over heat.

Thank you any advice will be appreciated.

find the rest off the impeller. with the lower off, i connect a water hose to the water tube, and run the engine, for a while to make sure you have circulation and that the tstat is opening. does not take a lot of water pressure.

If a boat is new to me, and I dont personally know the owners, I would always change the impeller, rebuild the carbs, (which may be 1 of your problems), change the plugs and lower unit oil and give it a compression test. It does sound like you have 3 problems to tackle first. The shifting issue, the impeller and the possible fuel delivery issue. Do a compression and spark test to start. Let us know what you find. Then I would fully rebuild the carb with a bath. Rebuild the water pump. When the lower unit is down, I would also remove the thermostats, and change them, when running the water or compressed air up the water line as Tash stated. Run it both ways to ensure that it is not clogged. Clean out the water intake area. Clean out the tell tale nipple and hose. And last but certainly not least, if you dont already have a manual, that is by far the first thing that you should do. Good luck and let us know what you find.

alright guys thanks for all the replys..greatly appreciated.. well i got the new impeller. it seems that the impeller does not fit unless i form it in there ..quiet a tight fit.. is this normal for the impeller having to be formed into the housing before u slide the housing down? well i got everything back up..cranked her up.. now it sounded a lil better..but only like a fine mist blowing out of the 2 main pee holes located on the mid shaft right below the pwer head. is this ok or do i really need a nice stream coming out of there? does the impeller have to be formed a certain way for it to suck the water? i have the manual but it dont seem to awnser that.. any comments will be greatly appreciated.. thank you again!!

The impeller will be tight yes. You will need to rotate the driveshaft clockwise while lowering the impeller houing over the impeller. A little oil on the fins of the impeller helps in this.

It is supposed to be water droplets blowing out the relief holes, not a stream. Most of the water goes out with the underwater exhaust.

Neak.... Regardless of what direction you install the impeller fins, they will flex in the proper direction the instant that engine cranks over..... nothing to be concerned about there.

If you haven't located the missing impeller blades, shove a stiff but somewhat flexible wire up the water tube(s) to make sure they haven't locked themselves in there somewhere.

u can use some section of old speedo cable, or maybe a long mechanical finger could aid you. hope u find it... :)
