I noticed something that is a bit inconsistent on mine due to play in the shift linkage and knob.

When this motor is in neutral or reverse, most of the time there is pin that lifts into place to limit the throttle. Is that correct? or is that only supposed to lift into place when in reverse? Sometimes it blocks the throttle in neutral and sometimes not. If it isnt, how do you adjust this linkage and / or tighten it so it doesnt have so much play. Its on the screw tight in the gearcase and it seats fine in the slots down by the prop. Is there something I can adjust / tighten up in the motor casing by the power head?

thanks

The pin is supposed to block in neutral, assuming that you are talking about the cylindrical extension on the detent screw.

First the pin blocks the throttle in neutral. Then there is a step on the Interlock Arm and pin (#100 on the diagram) where the same pin blocks the throttle in reverse at a higher speed.

In other words you can't go WOT in reverse, but you can go a lot faster than in neutral.

The adjustment screw (#74) is on side of the assembly (see #66 &#70) entering from the starboard. Be careful, the casting material is really weak and easy to break.

That assembly controls the shift rod, the reverse lock and of course the pin, so its important to consider all three when making the adjustment.

The diagram is easier to read in the 1973 parts manual.
