I have a 1973 VWB-27420 Ward Sea King (Chrysler). Does this thing have a water coolant exit? I can't find it anywhere!

Hmmm, my 78 is a 7.5hp, much different. But the exhaust is water cooled and the motor is air cooled. Does your flywheel have air scoops on it? If it does it is aircooled. My water outlets are 6 small holes on the rear of the midsection.

I don't think it has a scoop, it is a thick flywheel. I can't find much on this motor, nor can I figure out where the pee hold is. I took the Side panels off the lower unit and took a compressor to blow air through all the holes. The air just seemed to come out of the exhaust. I can't find any hoses on the block that would be for water other than two red ones coming out of the piston chamber, I figured they are exhaust.

Motors this old did not typically have pee holes. If you are concerned about water flow, just pull the lower unit and check the impeller. While the L/U is off run a flush hose through the input line and make sure water flows through the motor. This will definately show you where your exhaust is.

Worked on plenty of engines before but never removed lower unit. This should be fun. So if I flush water through the inlet hose and water comes out the exhaust this means water is getting through the engine? I started it in water today and the block was hot enough that it was uncomfortable to leave my hand on it.

Lower unit on outboards arent too bad. Never done this motor though. How long are you putting your hand on the motor before it gets too hot? Is there paint missing from the block? Yes if you flush the water through input and it makes its way through exhaust you are good to go. Does this motor have a thermostat? If it does it may not allow the water to flow through.

I held my hand on the head for about 5-10 seconds after throttling it for a while. It didn't make me jerk away. No paint missing from the block, this motor has been setting for years, I had to replace fuel lines, fuel diaphragm and rebuild the carb. I also replaced a gasket between a metal mount on the exhaust.

Not sure about a thermostat, probably a good idea to get a new impeller, just not sure how to identify it to find a replacement.

Yeah chances are if fuel lines were shot, impeller is too. 5-10 seconds is more than acceptable for the touch test. Ill see if I can find info on parts for this motor.

Only thing I can find on a Chrysler 20hp is 1973 and up. Are you sure this motor is made by chrysler?

Thanks. I saw a post on here about my model number and someone said it was a 73 Chrysler and pictures I have seen of other Chryslers look like mine. I also saw a post that it was a 72 because the first two numbers transposed in the model number defines the date (vwb-27420). Thanks for your help, the fuel pump kit on the page you gave me matches the one and got for this motor so I think we are on the right track.

The fuel lines inside the motor case were fine, the one outside the case to the fuel inlet was deteriorated so I decided to replace them all while I had enough new fuel line.

Thanks again for your help!

Got the bolts to drop the lower unit but I can't figure out how to disconnect the shift rod to get the unit all the way off. I put it back together and ran it in some water for a little while and it got too hot, at a simple touch of the heads it burnt my fingers pretty good.

From what I could see there was the drive shaft, shift rod and ones hose leading the exhaust, nothing else.

Any ideas?

Got it all apart, what I thought was an exhaust hose is the water coolant hose. Impeller was shredded! Time to replace, thanks for all your help!

Mounte the 20hp to my 12ft aluminum vhull boat. Success! It really moved! The boat says it is rated for a 18hp but I just rebuilt the transom and added a little more reinforcement, all was good!
