having some serious issues with this motor and apparently so did the previous owner. it had no top end, i got the kits rebuilt the carbs, did a water pump all the basics and got it running but it didn't run right it missed it skipped and it had no top end, i attempted to time the engine but no marks were even visible at 500 rpms, i tried the trick to time it with the plugs out at WOT the marks were there but it was WAY off, removed the flywheel and found that someone has put points in it, dual points with no condensors as opposed to the sensor set up, so im assuming it has a different crank in it (one with lobes). which i guess would explain why the timing marks aren't showing up under the light. well i got it running and timed it as best as i could by ear, and god did that boat fly! ran great for 2 days then last night as we were heading towards the launch just above idle it coughed a couple times straitened out and then died, was getting fuel i whipped out my spark tester and have no spark while my girl was cranking it and i was watching the spark tester window i noticed wisps of smoke coming from the coil area. does anyone have any idea what may have happened? i don't want to throw parts at it if there is something wrong that is just going to keep tearing up new parts!

I'm not an expert on outboards but no spark and smoke from the coil doesn't sound good. I did find this link which may be usefull.

Still fighting that thing, huh? OK, is it still using the CD amplifier or did they change it to a car coil? If a car coil, is it a 12 volt coil, or is it one designed to run with a ballast resistor? It's hard to answer your questions when so many unproven modifications have been done.

The 1972, 125 used a sensor. The crankshaft was ground, and had a pin to hold the sensor trigger wheel in place. It was not ground with a cam so that it would trigger breaker point's. If that engine has points', it is not a 1972, 125, or it is not a 72, 125 crankshaft. Hard to say what you have there.

it has an after market pulse pack by sierra, the clipper assembly is gone, the diode and leads are still present, the coil is also after market rapier i beleive is the mfg of the coil. the coil assembly actually has a hole melted in the bottom side from the inside out.... because the plastic filler is melted outwards and some oily stuff has been leaking out for a while by the looks of it. i have a second coil on and hooked up ready to test but it started to down pour lol so thats where i am with that. I am surfing autozones site right now and since somone has already gotten rid of the sensor electronic ignition abortion they put on this why not take the next step and get an msd blaster 3 automotive coil, a mallory .08 ballast resistor and a mallory condensor (to keep from frying the points) and just dump the whole electronic mess overboard and be done with it? some times i hate to say it but lo tech is better... this whole motor is proof that people of the early 70's were taken in by anything that had electric stamped on it, the electric shift is the other main issue they have had with this motor as well... all this is i feel because they went way overboard on making this complicated and reinventing the wheel, just so they could stamp electric on it

yep been around this one too lol the crank has been replaced with a different one with lobes, the core plug reads 125 and the cylander size is slightly larger than the 125 should be indicating it was bored over at some point.

i know i know i should just buy a newer motor and be done with it but guys when this thing runs it RUNS.
