iboats close friends,
Many of you have been through thick and thin and with us from almost the beginning of this place. We did a forums software change about a year ago and quite frankly we hate it! We are not happy with the number of you who can not log in or have problems posting. We are not happy with the speed of these boards. We have a list of 20 bugs that the developer won't / cant fix. I could go on and on.... :'(

We are thinking of changing to vBulletin boards software. This is one of the most widely used programs out there. Along with the change will be dedicated new hardware (servers) so your boards will be much faster. I am sure that during the transition there will be some bumps but think about it...can it get much worse? :%

Please give your input on making a change and experience with vBulletin if you have used it before.

Thanks!

vBulletin or phpBB

Run a test bed with each and see which one you like to admin the best. Both are php/MySQL. I've used both and like them. I've installed/administered phpBB and found it to work really well. phpBB has a nice data backup/restore feature, vBulletin probably does too. I don't know which database backend bboard uses but it may be possible to migrate this board's data to one of the other message boards. Since vBulletin is a commercial product, they might have people on staff that can do that (for a fee of course) though I wouldn't rule out phpBB's community support for their product.

my $.02

BTW, this board works fine for me overall except that the search feature leaves a lot to be desired.

It works OK for me but as mentioned, it needs to be searchable. As we all know, the search feature here has some serious shortfalls...

Re: From Admin - Will you accept another forums system change?

I am one of the "older members" and I have watched the changes and growing pains.

I imagine my requirements would be:

a better search function !!

and as long as the forum will support the traffic during the high periods....

Just out of being curious..... what was the most active period for iboats? Is there a record month? What is the overall average based on a year?

It's your sandbox and I am willing to hang in there!

I'm for it provided, like others have said, it has a usable search function. Archived info here is invaluable.

I voted yes but the OWNERS(IBOATS) should do what is best for THEIR peace of mind.

Hey, I'm just along for the ride. Long as the boat floats and the beer's cold I'm OK. ;)

Requests would be to keep rank, avatar, signature, and I miss  and . :)

I see they offer a Demo. Might I be so bold as to suggest that iboats sponsor a demo and post a link for us to check out? http://www.vbulletin.com/admindemo.php

This is what it looks like... http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/

(Please pardon the links)

I am for it if it will put an end to all these supercillious pictures. :%:^
Edit: Do views count as abstencions or approval? What percentage will count as a quorum? ;)

I have no real issues with this version, although I did prefer the older version, but if you feel it is best for your business. Have at it. One suggestion, if possible with this software, send out an email broadcast to your members informing them of the impending transition. Obviously this forum has lost some members since the change and you may be able to draw some of them back if they know that the boards are no longer being run on this software. With nearly 88k members it may not be practical to notify all members but certainly letting the formerly regular users know couldn't hurt.

Go for it. I joined right after the last change, and was a lurker before. It was faster the first time. The search also worked.
