Hi All, New in this part of the forum.

I picked up a Starcraft 16' for fishing and crabbing in the bays on the north oregon coast. It needed work, ran like crap, but the compression is good, 120 on all cylinders. Spark is good. It's an electric shift and the first time out it would go into gear with a huge clunk and a jerk from the idle being too hi.

I cleaned the carbs and it made a world of difference. Now it idles at 1000 rpm, in forward gear, in the water. No load is 1300 rpm or so.

The idle needs to be high because when putting it into reverse the engine bogs. It bogs to the point that setting the idle properly (700 rpm) in forward, the motor dies when it goes into reverse. Bogs much worse than when going into forward. It acts like it's under a heavy load in reverse, but under a normal load when in forward.

Is this normal? or where should I look? I'm stumped.

Thanks for any help you can provide..

Compensating a bogging down problem with a higher idle rpm does not seems a good solution. Ultimately I suspect damage will occur in the LU gears. in gear idling 1000rpms seems much to high jmho mind you

depending of other expert opinions to come ..i suspect your LU may need a close look " into" if the problem is not top side . drop the LU and see if the PH rotates smoothly and freely (plugs out)
POST MDL # !! if your going to live with it may as well get a service manual......... easy download..

The oil pump h on it for reverse has more load.----Nut not enuff to stall a motor in good condition.----And 120 PSI is low for that motor.----Test with another gauge.----Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" on each lead?
