1972 evinrude screech

hello i have a 1972 evinrude 25hp that makes a screeching noise at high revs sounds like starter ingaging anyone have any suggestions

If it has a recoil (rope) starter assembly on it that could be the source of the noise. If it's also electric start you could try removing the rope starter and then run it to see if that eliminates the noise. If so a rebuild of the recoil starter is not too difficult to do.

i have already taken the rope start housing off and still makes the noise.

Could be the position of the armature plate, not the resulting higher RPM's, that's causing the trouble. It advances to a certain point and then something starts rubbing on the flywheel. I'd look it over real good with the engine not running, advancing from slow to fast and looking for wobble or anything peculiar.<br />Joe Reeves posted a neat trick for stabilizng these with a punch and a light hammer. Gotta pull the flywheel to do it, though.

thanks itstippy i am going to check the armature plate tommorrow i seem to think thats where my problem is.
