1972 Hydroelectric shift-mechanical question

I'm about ready to buy a new lower unit for this motor(1972 Evinrude HydroElectric 65 HP) just from frustration!

Here is what is going on. I have thoroughly checked all wiring switches solenoids etc and believe they are all working properly. I have been on this forum reading all the comments and have found it to be very helpful. Now I'm stuck- I have the lower unit off and on the bench. It is in neutral which I assume is wrong and I can't get it in forward.
I have setup a drill press to spin the shaft and the only time anything happens is when I give twelve volts to both wires. It bogs the drill down and tries to go into reverse, in fact the prop does spin some.

With no power why isn't it in forward?

This is the last hurdle in a three year restoration project that has both boat and motor looking almost brand new.

I did have it on the water once this summer and it ran and worked okay but started developing shifting problems. First, not going into forward and reverse worked fine and then jumping into forward by itself.

Anybody know where I can get a used gearcase/lower unit for this? Any advice to fix mine would be great.

Thanks again

You may have to take the plunger out of the pump and "polish" it. Sometimes, not very often, they will develop a burr or something and not let it slide in the pump housing properly.

I had to do that a couple of times in that era.

Good luck!

having the same engine,I also had the same problem. My solution turnd out to be an exposed wire at the solinoid cap where the wire entered the solonoid well.I replaced the wire harness and have had no further problems. Incidently it took a while to locate where the harness wore through.

With a broken wire you should still have forward (no power to either solenoid). If the blue wire was cut, you would have forward and neutral and if the green wire was cut you would only have forward.

There's a 60hp hydroelectric shift complete motor for sale in Thomasville CT(a few miles N of Waterbury) for $100. You'd have to take a REALLY beat Glaspar G3 with it. I think it's a 1970 or '71, supposedly ran before but's been outside for a while - I offered him $20 for it. If you're interested, post back & I'll see if I can find his phone number.

Wait a sec, shouldn't it be in forward, with no power? I thought that was part of the system so you weren't stranded if it fails. No? I could have sworn no power was forward, power to one solenoid for nuetral, and power to both for reverse. This information is fresh in my mind because I'm going through the same thing with a 115 Hydro electric shoft right now.

Re: 1972 Hydroelectric shift-mechanical question

Ledgefinder- Thanks for the tip, I would appreciate it if you can find the number, although I don't want to be in the same situation with a new motor I may take a swing down and look at it.

No power is supposed to be forward but...I have neutral at this point...all electrical is fine on my motor so I suspect something mechanical is wrong...looking for tips on how to troubleshoot mechanical problems.

And so goes another day in dry dock......

My bad, I misread. I was thinking you had forward, and were looking for neutral.

Id still take a look at the plunger (which is what moves the clutch dog). I bet it wont slide all the way forward and thats why you are "stuck" in neutral.

HI ..
check/change the gearoil. this baby is very sentitive with oil...
I'm not sure, but As I remember it will go in forward when engine runs, if engine stops, it will go into neutral, as no oil presure. Just like a Automaticgearbox on your car.
but I'm not sure...

Mikael

Re: 1972 Hydroelectric shift-mechanical question

Actually it should drop into forward when the engine is off or there is no power to the shft solenoids.

It is "spring loaded" into forward. You must have hydraulic pressure to get it OUT of forward.

If its stuck in neutral its because the clutch dog (shifter) isnt going all the way forward or the forward gear/dog engagement lugs are completely gone.
