Worn clutch dog would make you think that you hit something. Usually under a load, but not allways.
Check your prop for a spun hub. With a magic marker draw a line on the outer hub and the inner hub. ( the 2 are separated by the rubber bushing in the prop). Go for a boat ride. Check the alignment of the 2 marks. If they are where you out them, prop is ok. If they are not lined up, you have a bad prop.
Did you have the lower unit off before this problem started? Did you change the LU grease and by mistake remove the pivot pin screw instead of the lower drain plug? If you did, did you line everything up before you put the pivot screw back in? This is the pin that the shift cradle pivots on, and if the cradle isn't thru the pin, it won't shift. Don't ask how I know this.
