Re: 1972 Starcraft Chieftain restoration

Worked on stripping some paint, glue and bed liner from the inside of the boat today. Other than that just pondering new ideas. Im kind of leaning towards Pettit paint, it turned out real nice on North Beach's liquid limo so I may spend the extra money for that, time will tell. Hopefully I can get the new transom laminated together next weekend so I can get it put back in and flip it over to finish stripping paint. Have a great Sunday guys.

Lot's of room there with the cap off, no doubt about that. Had wild ideas to make it open, but I just don't have the heart to cut it up.
Well, it's been a little over 3 months since I picked the boat up. I'm nearing the end of the teardown process and getting ready to build her back up. So 3 more months I should have her back on the water :D. I only wish, probably more like 3 years! I just want to thank everyone for their advice as I never would have had the courage to attempt this project without your support.

Yah, I had serious thoughts of turning the Islander into a runabout/cuddy instead of a cabin boat. The guys reminded me that the kiddos will love hanging out in that cabin which was totally reason enough. They will love it.

OK, start the clock....

Maiden voyage mid October for BN and his Chief!:D

Havn't got a whole lot accomplished over the last few days, pretty much just sitting and staring at her. For some reason that hasn't helped. This weekend I'm going to try and get the paint stripped off the cap and inside. I would also like to get my transom glued together. I do have one concern, I bought my ply a few months back so it could dry. It has been really humid here lately and am thinking the wood has probably absorbed some moisture. Should I be ok to glue and seal it or should I wait? I don't want it rotting from the inside out.

Unless it's been sitting out under a tree for months, I wouldn't worry about it.

No, it's been sitting in my storage unit on some 2x4's. I'll slap her together this weekend if I get a few free minutes :D.

Well I got the new transom cut out and test fitted today!! I'm pretty excited about that. One piece of the puzzle. I still have to laminate the 2 sheets together but I test fit it and it seems ok, a little tight but I think it will work. I'm gonna use Tightbond waterproof glue and then screw the 2 sheets together to pull it tight as the wood isn't perfectly straight. Menards didn't have a very good selection when I picked up the wood.

BG, man that beast would look awesome polished out!!! It would only take 2- 2lb cans of the Shark hide at 59.99 each, another 59.99 for the protectant. Very easy stuff to work with. Watch the video on their site.

Has anyone on the board used Shark Hyde?

Nice progress man. That is one big honkin hunk of transom you have there. Funny how similar these hulls look stripped but you can sure tell the difference when you see the transoms. Looks alot bigger without the cut out for the OB as well.

Ya it's one big hunk of wood! I got the 2 pices glued together but I'm not real happy with the results. It doesn't seem to have pulled together as tight as I thought it should. I'll let the glue set up and see what I have. It will be sealed with epoxy so I have no concerns there.

Yah, these big transoms make for a legit wrestling match to move around!

I ended up tossing on some real weight to the Islander transom.:)

I punched in just a couple of screws to keep them from sliding apart.

The original plan was to weight it down like that but I didn't have a very flat surface. I put in 30 or so screws, I'll find out weather it holds or not.

I would think once epoxied and all bolted in not much that can happen anyway at least on the O.B. 's like my mariner there are the knee brace bolts, corner bolts, motor bolts, and screws from under splashwell Seems it would be pretty solid after all that.
