I'm in the process of replacing the impeller on My 73 Johnson. It was easy enough to get most of the parts (some have been replaced with other part #'s but seem fine) The problem I'm having is that seal on top of pump housing is different from original even though same part # . The original one was solid rubber with a flange that fit inside tube for driveshaft new one is just a piece of foam basically and seems porous. Does anyone know if Johnson changed this part? Or is it possible that it was packaged wrong from Mfg. ? Thanks in advance for the help guys.

Re: 1973 65esl-73r impeller seal question ?

I bought an OEM water pump rebuild kit for my 65373R 1973 Evinrude 65 HP. It came with the same foam seal. I put it on and had to drop the lower unit again later on. The new seal was shaped just like the old one had been after being in there a couple of weeks. The drive shaft tube pressed it down and made it take on the same shape as the old one. It just seals water from going up there and rusting the drive shaft to the cranshaft. I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Thanks for the reply todd good to know it isn't the wrong part in the package. I figured it would get smooshed in there pretty tight just didn't want to put it together if it was wrong thanks again.
