1973 aristo steering problem

Just purchased a 1973 19 disconnected steering rod but wheel will still not turn ??????????????? any one have any ideas?

Cable is probably rusted solid. Your best bet might be to replace the entire helm if the original is still on there.

I have 78 Aristocraft 19.
You need 17' Teleflex rack cable
SSC13417
or
SSC12417
if your helm is good. Mine was cracked, so I got the whole new rack system.

The cable lies in the gunwale pocket, which tends keep water, since the drain hole is 1/4 inch of the bottom, and the cable rusts solid.
Getting the cable out of the steering tube is a big PITA, since cable has to make a turn in close quarters......
but can be done with a lot of muscle and persuasion.......
I hammered mine out with a socket extension, getting it in was another big PITA. wise grips and taping in .... with 1 inch of swing distance...
Tap Tap Tap for 30 minutes and it went in...

Sometimes you have to pull the engine or move it over to pull/insert the cable. Hammering on it just makes it mushroom and never wanna come out.

it aint no outboard.
so take out engine, outdrive and everything else.......
or use some persuasion, the steering rod/tube clears, just cable itself needs to make a turn too close to slide in/out easily.

how do i go about removing the entire steering system from the boat. I have the slide loose but will not gho over the end of cable.

got the tube loose on the transom but will not go over the end of cable.do i have to remove whole unit together?

Ayuh,... The cable is supposed to slide outa the tube...
If it don't, it's corroded...
Ya gotta do whatever it takes to separate 'em...

After further looking someone had weldded the end and weld will not go through,so i am grinding and sanding to get it out. Thank you will post later if it works.
