I don't know if you solved your transom instalation problem or not, but I had the same problem. On mine there are shelves on each side of the boat that prevented me from getting it in. I cut one back about 2' and was able to wedge one end into the back corner and swing it into place. I then was able to lift it up in place.
When I got it in place I tacked wood door shims under it with hot glue. When I swung the transom in, it slid up the wedges and ended up in the exact position without having to slide it around. I didn't want the wet cloth to move on me. I also practiced installing it many times. I hope this makes sense.

i have the same issues with the sides shelves, plus side panels....was hoping to not have to remove those or cut the shelves...but i may end up doing that just so i don't have to piece the transom together....i'm putting in a full thickness transom, instead of just a 'bump' transom that was original...i want the extra thickness to help add more support for the swim platform or towing a tube.

ps....thanks for the files

yep...the boat is still just sitting there....no magical elves came in the middle of the night to work on it...

still haven't bought the plywood for the transom yet....funds are just too tight right now...

No elves here either. I did get my engine stringers fully glassed on the inside. If it wouldn't have been for a some darn Blue Lights I found hiding in my fridge, I would have pictures of the stringers fully mounted in the boat. Maybe this weekend.

I really like the looks of this boat! The lines are Smoooooth! Then again, SeaRay's have always been nice looking rigs. Good luck with the restore!

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

Thanks Casey,
i do love the lines of this old gem....and they were built solid is a rock....keeping in mind that i see alot of people restore boats from the '80s and '90s on here, that need new transoms and stringers...
my big yellow banana girl is 39 years old...but i'm surprised at how much 'good' wood i'm finding as i move closer to the front of the boat

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

update....i did get the first layer for the transom cut out last night and tried to test fit it.....and yep....it won't go in as one piece, but i may have a solution for that with the side panels and built in shelf being in the way......sawzall!!!

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

okay....took out one of the side panels and trimmed back the glassed in shelf......
grabbed the first layer of plywood, that i cut using my cardboard template, to test fit my transom....
it fits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
had to do a little trimming on the plywood mainly due to the fact that i cut it out from the template, but cut it outside the lines about a 1/4"...rather be too large and not fit as opposed to being too small.

now i just need to get another sheet of wood to make the next layer....then i should be ready to seal it up and install it

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

Epoxy or poly resin?

To your earlier Q @outdrive keyhole, there is a template floating around here somewhere, for the Mercruiser keyhole. Guessing that the current keyhole is located correctly & centered, some are not, & depending on how you plan to cut the keyhole, you can set the transom in place, and follow the current hole to mark the cutout. Pull the plywood & cut the keyhole. You'll probably want some sort of a hole to aid in clamping it together when you bed the ply anyway.

Drill the bolt holes & chamfer the relief after it's installed.... Square the bolt holes to the angle of the transom.

If you're using poly resin, the 1st coat is only to aid in adhesion of the glass & poly to the bare wood and prevent 1 or the other from wicking the resin away & starving the plywood or csm of resin. The 2nd coat should be applied & used to wet out the csm JUST as the 1st coat starts to tack off, not after its dry. Depending on when Tues, the poly may still be tacky, but on bare wood, even in cool temps, but I wouldn't think 24hrs, since it's supposed to be warmer after noon Tues...

Rough & scuff will aid the adhesion if it does dry. But wet on wet is always a better bond, chemical & mechanical.

But if epoxy, yeah, tomorrow...:)

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

thanks for the info...this is poly resin.
i made my keyhole template.
after reviewing some old messages from Oops!, i'll fully install and glass in the transom, before i cut out the keyhole and drill any of the other holes...except the holes used for clamping.
then i'll dress all the holes and exposed edges with strips of cloth and resin
