Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

today's plan:
grind on hull, fillets and transom...
tab around the transom with 8" of 1708....4" on transom x 4" on hull
precut full transom sized layer of 1708, but making it 8" bigger along the hull sides and bottom for overlap
may get that piece resin'd in place too...not sure yet....get's dark way too early these days

I know 1708 has CSM on it but...It's very thin, and OOPS tells me that he believes you get a fail proof lamination if you put down a layer of 1.5 CSM prior to the 1708. Not saying you have to, just reporting what I was told and what I do. How's the toe??

Toe is feeling much better, i think....keep it immobilized most of the time so i dont feel much of anything.
didn't get to do anything on the boat until around 6:45pm....got dark about 45 minutes later, so i didn't get much done

proabably only have less than a month of cool weather before winter sets in. plan is to have the transom completely finished and the rest of the boat gutted, before i have to put her to bed for the winter. Can't find any place to store her inside and allow me to still work on her.

will clean it out tonight and try to get the tabbing down on the sides and bottom....4" on the transom & 4" on the hull...using 1708 glass (??)...or was it CSM??...i forgot....will have to go back an re-read....lol

Some just use 1708 but I like a layer of 1.5 csm first and then the 1708. Your choice. Make sure to scuff with 60 grit and wash down with acetone prior to tabbing.

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

Yep, that gives the Thin layer of CSM on the 1708 a better base for adhering. Like I said, That's what I do, Not everybody does. If you have a good grind down to god fresh clean glass then you can just tab with the 1708, lot's of guys do that and it appears to work fine. I just like the extra confidence that I get doing it this way. Helps me believe I won't get any de-lamination later on. But hey, everybody knows I'm just an...

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

how's this....(even though i only show 1 layer of 8" 1708 for tabbing, i'll be doing the CSM+1708 for tabbing)

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

how much tabbing and cover do you do to the top edge of the transom....i don't have alot of room there...wood transom almost goes up to where the cap joins...maybe an 1-1/2" below the cap joint

Wait, you mean to tell me that you participate in the girls recreational sports, and they don't return the favor & fight over who gets to use the good grinder while working on the family boat when you get home from a game?

A family that resto's a glasser together, stays togeth.... yeah, never mind  Itches together maybe ....

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

i think i'm dangerous enough around the boat...toes, fingers..(yeah, had a mishap with the grinder the other day)...so i prolly dont wanna put power tools in their hands...
although, they have come in handy when i left something up in the boat and i don't feel like climbing up into the boat to retrieve it...i just lift them up ontop the cap and get them to get whatever i left in there

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

Not really a good day to do any glassing right now...so i figures i would tackle the belly tank and try to get out...
tank still had about 20 gallons in it, so it took awhile to get it empty...well...mostly empty.
after some gentle coaxing....finally came free....

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

got about half of the gas tank sand down and cleaned up...i can hear a metal tube or somethign rolling around in the tank, i think it is the fuel pick up tube. Will have to cut an access hole in the top of the tank for some investigation. btw...56 gallon tank

also managed to dress up some of my PB fillets on the transom, had to go back in a couple places and add some more.
will sand them out today and hopefully start on my tabbing
