Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

yep...very carefully...
fill the tank with water and cut out hole with a 8" hole saw, or a square hole using a pair of air shears...

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

after cleaning up my fuel tank some more, i think i may need to replace it for 2 reasons:
1) many pitted areas, some pretty deep
2) tank didn't quite fit right...was about 2" too narrow to fit snuggly between the stringers

so i've been laying out a new tank, since i can build one that better fits as opposed to buying one...

here is what i've laid out so far:
tank1.jpg

tank2.jpg

need to take a few more measurements inside the boat before i start making the dimensioned drawings
it's approx. 26"W x 11"H x 72"L
the flat sides are approx. 7-1/2"H....the flat bottom is approx. 4-1/4"W

close to 70 gallons

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

can actually bend my toe some!!!! still a little sore...cut off most of the crushed toenail....made my wife queezy...lol..

climbed up in the boat and sanded down my fillets and did a final ruff-n-scuff on the hull and transom...
washed everything down.....
tomorrow..finally...will be doing the tabbing....8" of CSM followed up by 8" of 1708 (4" on transom, 4" on hull)
then follow up with full layer of 1708, extending 7" on hull (3" overlap from tabbing)
then, follow that layer with another full layer of 1708, extending 10" onto the hull
and finally, last full layer of glass..CSM, extending 13" onto hull....

any modifications to my plan??

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

I would probably leave off the last layer of CSM, unless you want to hide the texture of the 1708 before coating with gel or bilge coat...just my opinion, nothing scientific about it...

Maybe change the second/final layer to 1708?

BTW, I like your tank design...you have the means to build it your self or would you have to farm it out?

And, I know you'll save a chunk of change doing it yourself, but how much of a difference between made vs. bought?

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

i can do most of it myself. a freind of mine works at a shop with a waterjet and a laser cutter, may have him cut out the baffles and endcaps for me....but worst case, i can cut it and form it up myself...still need to look into the prices of aluminum sheets. i believe my existing tank is made from 10ga plate

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

from what i've seen readily available, or custom made, a tank this size would cost me between $500-$600

if i build it myself, the aluminum will cost me around $200

A significant savings...very much worth the effort...plus you literally get a perfect fit, custom tank...nice!:)

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

got an official quote for having my tank farmed out to a tank company.....well, 2 quotes....$695 - $795....
yeah, i'll be making it myself....will give me something to do after i button the boat up for the winter...

also been reading the USCG Regulations for fuel tanks....not as bad as i thought it would be

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

cleaned up the inside of the boat and removed a lot more of the loose stuff that's been piling up in the front of the boat...also put up a tarp over the back and setup a light in there to warm things up

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

keeping just one light in there is keeping it a little tolerable in there, will likely need to get a larger tarp

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

nothing new happening yet...this weekend is suppose to be back close to 60 degrees...with my tarp and lamp, i may have it warm enough in there to finish my transom.
form there, the boat will be buttoned up for the winter. but i will still have my gas tank to build and finish my seating...that should keep me busy during the cold months

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

nothing happened this weekend on the project....between mine and SWMBO's b-day, sick kids, and routine trip to hospital for the youngest one...just couldn't sneak outside to work on the boat....

but this coming weekend is looking better....
