Once you have all your measurements get your foam board and draw a center line with a straight edge.

boat074-1.jpg

THen put your 2" marks along this line the same as on your stringer.

boat075-1.jpg

Now take your measurement and double it so you can just use the measurement as your center. Just put a mark at each side all the way up, then connect the dots and cut it out a little big. Like 1/4", it will be good as long as you arent a complete hack at connect the dots. I guess if you are then make your marks every 1"! In the picture below the green sharpie was my attempt at just winging it. I was close but there was no way that it wouldve worked. Thankfully I figured this measuring thing out!

boat058-1.jpg

Now all you have to do is finish the rest of it. This is how I made the cuts around the bilge so I didnt have to measure and mark.

Then just stick your arm in with a sharpie and scribe a line around.

boat064-1.jpg

THis is what you have.

Cut it out and viola!

And here are some shots of mine done.

As you can see here, I have left an overlap at each section so that when I cut the wood I can cut it at a 45 degree angle to one another so it overlaps and gives a better, stronger joint.

Nice job and great concept.

I thought Lowkee's method was pretty good concept also, just a little confusing. I was initially thinking of doing something like Lowkee but scribing the hull with a compass or similar tool with a steady measurement like 2" onto foam then tracing that outline with the same measurement larger onto plywood. Not sure if that makes sense or not.

Taking the measurements at predetermined intervals is called, making a table of offsets, and laying out the table of off sets on to a medium (foam in this case) is called lofting lines. Now you know the boat builders technical terms for this process. It's really simple and easy to do once you've done it.

Well thank you! I call it getin r done! Truly this was the only way that would allow me to do it with absolutely no chance of wasting materials. It turned out perfect, not one spot that was either too short or too long. Didnt even have to trim any. I cut it 1/4" big thinking I would have to iron out some areas but the lines that were drawn ended up exactly right!

Im not saying tht Lowkees wouldnt or didnt work, just giving him a hard time! He just had too many areas that were miscut for me to use that idea without the fear of ruining 10$ foam boards or worse yet 30$ ply. And no, I have no clue what you are trying to do:confused::D But as Ive said, a picture says 1.2billion words.

that is just the size of it...You shouldve seen it stock! It was like 20"x24" Thanks for the attaboy! You still out on the water with your new motor?

Fantastic idea on the overlap! I wish I had done that. I ended up using crossmembers to keep the boards even, which worked but hardly as elegant as your solution. The template looks clean as can be, what a great job on it! I do have one question about it, though.. Did you measure each side or did you assume the keel was always the centerpoint? I know I had quite a few areas where one side was quite different from the other (chine reinforcements, etc).

I tried that exact method but at much larger intervals (6 inches), but stopped as I couldn't see how I would accurately replicate all the curves.. duh.. I could have lowered the interval!

That is a method I wanted to use, since you get a perfect line every time, but I, not thinking I would need it in the future, removed the original deck lines and had no accurate way of following where the edge of the future deck would meet the hull. If you can see where you orig deck will meet the hull, that method will be easy as can be (until you run out of stringer towards the bow, that is). Removing that deck line was a big big mistake for me. You guys were very smart to keep your deck lips visible. Prior to these latest rounds of restore threads, I never saw anyone post about keeping that lip, so I just didn't know.

For future restores, I think between our threads we are covering the gamut as to restore techniques and practices. We've all already seen the number of people joining just to say thanks for the info. Feels nice to pass on our experiences to make life easier for others. I just wonder how long these threads will be by the time we finish our boats.. I hope nothing nearing the hull extension thread! I'll shoot myself if my restore takes that long to complete!

Can't wait to see your plywood deck sitting in there! Just wait until you feel your feet stand on it.. it's indescribable! :)

Live and learn! Funny thing is that leaving my lip was an accident:eek: shhhhhhh I mean yeah, I meant to do that! I just left the lip there because I didnt want to grind that close to the hull with a cut off wheel. Then when it was time to go back to grind it out I realized just in time that I had no template to use as stringers so there would be no way, other than guessing, to know where the deck needed to go...

Also, yes I used the stringer to hull side measurement for both sides. I measured several locations across the other side and they were within 1/8" so I figured I would be just fine. It really turned out MUCH better than I anticipated. I mean it truly follows the hull shape like it was traced off the original.

I couldnt agree more with this entire comment. Especially the self decapitation if this thread ends up taking that much time. I couldnt see getting close to John's pics of work so far. I mean if you removed all the chit chat back and forth his thread is about as long as ours:eek: His thread was the ONE that I based my resto on. It would be an honor to be the ONE for someone else as well. However, half the fun for me is figuring out each step with minimal knowledge and it is also fun to see how others facing the same challenge overcome them also. I still watch your video for a good laugh. I mean it made perfect sense to you but just confused the hell out of everyone else:D In the end, whatever works works.

John that scares me! With mine being a 150hp that is going to be fully remaned I am scared that I will need a hydrofoil in my little boat! At least I KNOW now that the boat can handle it! Im glad to hear the stories of your use after such a long resto. It is hard sometimes to conceptualize this thing actually floating in water and moving under its own power after being a garage ornament for so long. Thats called inspiration man, and you have provided a TON for me. So thanks;)

And of course I will keep after it, I havent spent all this money, time and pain to give up now! Hoping the deck will be cut coated on the underside and maybe have all the through hull holes filled in with PB this weekend. My resin is on its way to the house as we speak. Its funny how lofty my goals were at the beginning of this. As I go I become more realistic every weekend. 4 months ago I would think that on Monday I would have a complete deck painted and all. Not no more...

Yup! wrapped her up last night. Took a little longer than I wanted due to the whole hull paint job but I finished around midnight:D I KNOW I will catch air a time or two and what a feeling it will be to just not care;)

Re: 1973 wellcraft 165 sport airslot project w/ pics

I did get some work done last night though. After getting in the rest of the resin(fingers crossed) it inspired me to get out in the garage. I went to work sanding the insides of the holes that I made for drainage through the stringers and the transom. Then mixed a normal viscosity batch of epoxy and coated them so that it soaked in. Was about to move on to mixing up a batch of PB with some 1/4" glass strand that I got then realized I had forgot to drill two holes:eek: So I grabbed the trusty angle die grinder with a hole saw on it and proceeded to damn near catch my stingers on fire! That bit is DULL and just spun and spun causing a great deal of heat to build up...lots of smoke! Oh well, might get them finished tonight. If not it will be tomorrow then its on to the deck.

I got the cut mat so that I can mix a thick batch that will have some substance to it. That I will use to fill in the keel depression in the bilge area. If I dont do that I will always have water in there because it sits at its lowest about an inch below the drain:rolleyes: I think it will work fine for this and will be a quick one shot deal instead of having to build up multiple(read, 6-10 layers of 1708) layers. I hope!

I must of missed something...you painted the hull?

I feel so behind you guys. I need to get my motivation back.

Three things I have yet to experience with this boat:
1. A deck to walk on
2. This boat on actual water
3. Hearing my motor run

No!lol John asked me if I was done yet. Sarcastically I replied that I finished it in its entirity in one day! Just a joke.

I have all the deck boards cut to fit off of the templates! Today I need to really FIT them then I will start coating the underside in resin and maybe glass it. We shall see how the weather cooperates and if my buddy or my wife will help me. I have some pics to post. Ill do that tomorrow maybe tonight.
