Re: 1974 21' Starcraft Supersport

What would be the primary purpose of the boat? I would start from there.

Boats aren't investments, you will probably loose the same amount of money with either boat. The important thing is for you to get a boat that fits your needs. If you do that, you will get more use out of it, which is the only way IMO to really get your money out of it. Let us know how you will use the boat and in what type of water and you will get some good suggestions from the folks around here. If there is a mistake to be made, at least one of us has made it and is willing to share the lesson.

Well it's coveted by me because it's the mother of all SS's and I loathe I/O's. Won't fit in my garage though so I don't see me getting one :p

I live in Branson, MO. We have 2 good size lakes (Bull Shoals and Table Rock) and 1 small lake (Taneycomo) all within 5 minutes from our house. I will use the boat for fishing, pleasure cruising, water sports (swimming, tubing, skiing), camping and entertaining. Do you guys think this boat can encompass all of the above?

In addition, I have a big extended family so I think this boat would give us more options taking family and friends out.

Yes to all except camping on the boat. The SS is a versatile boat and as long as you go with the wrap-around bow seating they have plenty of room for passengers. The back-to-back seats would sleep two though not all that comfy.

You will want to get a 26' Starcraft Islander for sleeping aboard:)

If you mean beaching it and camping on shore then yes it's perfect for that too with it's fairly shallow draft.

Nice purchase MC, I almost drove up to look at it, but I'm waiting for the wife to get a teaching job(state jobs are hard to get in MO right now). It looked really good in the pictures that he sent me. Start a restoration thread, I'd love to see how it turns out.

The guys are right, 22 footers with OB's are RARE. A 150 to 175 OB would really wake up that old hull. They performed OK with with older 140's. A new 140 would probably be quite adequate.

The 18 with an I/O (Merc) is a wonderful package. So is an 18 OB.

I guess it boils down to what you are going to do with it?

The 22 footer is a lot bigger than you may think it is. Even the 18's are larger than most 18 foot boats.

I think that's a great find, if you can use a boat that big.

Re: 1974 21' starcraft supersport

I drove 8+ hours today to pick up the boat. However, I did not return with it. The hull was bent and I felt it would be to much to repair. Kind of sad but maybe a blessing.

IF ANY ONE WANTS IT LET ME KNOW AND I WILL GIVE YOU A CONTACT NUMBER. THE OWNER OF THE SUPERSPORT SAID HE WOULD TAKE $750 FOR IT. He told me if he didn't sell it he was going to take it to the junk yard and watch them crush it.

On my way out of town to pick up the supersport I stopped and looked at a 1971 Islander. It was in great shape. I may pick it up tomorrow. If I do I will give you all a full report.

The lower right picture might show a big dent in the hull. Not sure though.

What do I win? :p

Seriously though, bummer. Good for you for not getting emotionally wrapped up in it and dragging home a boat you'd regret.

Well I guess the 22' SS hulls are about to be even more rare if she sees her way to the scrapyard.

If it were in my area I'd love to check her out and see just how bad the structural damage is. I don't doubt that you made a good choice...patience is a virtue when buying older boats:)

Good luck on that Islander(it will be a great boat for you usage as well):)

Re: 1974 21' starcraft supersport

I bought the 1971 Islander yesterday. It's it good shape and the floor/ transom are sound. The person I bought it from took good care. He had recently rebuilt the engine and changed the crank shaft and put a holey 4 barrel carborator on it. He was in the process of changing the U joints, seals and bearing in the out drive when he took ill. Due to his illness he told me he couldn't finish his boat. The interior is white and red and in great shape. The hull is in great shape although the paint is only ok. The boat is painted white.

The boat has many extras - 65 lb minn kota trolling motor with wireless wrist control band, 3 anchors, stainless steel barbque, ship to shore radio, cb radio, fish finder, GPS, table, 3 batteries, 10 life jackets, 3 extra fishing seats, full canopy, traveling cover, springloaded mount for a kicker motor.

My friend and I are going to install the outdrive next weekend so I should have her back in the water in 2 to 3 weeks. My kids are looking forward to going camping on the lake.

I have never had an inboard outboard boat before so this will be a new experience. Any thoughts?

All my boating friends that have seen the boat think I got a great deal. My wife who only likes open bow boats (she really likes our 1969 Starcraft Offshore V) she thinks she will like the Islander. She also said "they just keep getting bigger" I told her my next boat was going to be a 48'
Grand Banks --- just kidding.

Sorry I don't have any pictures to post right now. I will take some this afternoon and get them posted for you all to see. When I was picking up the boat yesterday the guy I bought it from got 2 calls for the boat. One of the guys on the phone said he was willing to pay more for it than he was selling to me for. When he got off the phone he told me I could put it back on Craig's list tomorrow and make some money. He laughed........

He also gave me a second lower unit as a spare as well as a 12' tilt trailer.

Congrats on the new rig:)

Looking forward to seeing some pictures. I have to agree that it sounds like you got quite a bit with the extras. How much did you pay for it?

I paid $1600.00. Do you have any comments about my previous question?

I/Os can be a pain to look after (outdrive boots etc) but they're in many ways easier for basic maintenance once you get an oil change syphon and learn to use a drop sheet around the motor when you're working on her to stop staining the floor. They also leave less room in the stern area than an outboard, but if you look after her, she'll look after you. Good choice going for the Islander... great weather protection for your family when it gets gnarly! Good luck and post some pix... please!

WOW you got the deal of the century on that!:D

The Minn Kota w/ wireless control, GPS and fishfinder are worth half of the $1600 alone:eek:

I try to stay positive but since you asked I will say that I certainly prefer outboards myself. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.

I like being able to repower a boat w/out pulling a car motor out and rebuilding the transom. I/O's are better on fuel and usually quieter though.

What exactly is the motor? Hopefully a merc.

Also curious is your offshore V an OB model?
