Hello. I just got this 9.9 Evinrude motor given to me last weekend by a buddy as it wouldn't start. He claims bad fuel so I thought I would take a look. It has good spark so I figured I would remove the carb and clean it and then see if it runs. Problem is I can't seem to access the inner nut that attaches the carb to the motor. It is inaccessible. Is there a trick to getting this nut off?

Also I see there is an idle speed knob on the side (with slow and fast)....does this replace the high/low speed needles found on other motors?

Thanks for your help

Welcome to iboats!

The knob on the side does not replace the high/low speed mixture needle valves. That side knob adjusts the motor speed when you turn the throttle to the idle position.

Thanks Xcusme for that information. First I have seen that, wonder what the thinking behind the concept was.....

Thanks again

Being able to externally change the low end idle speed is a nice feature. It allows you to change the motor speed for trolling etc.

Re: 1974 9.9 Evinrude model 10424S

Hello - following up on my question yesterday, I have been looking at this a bit more and it looks like the recoil starter has to be removed to get at the right side nut (when facing the front of the motor ). Is there another way of removing this carb without removing the starter (have lost more than a few battles with starters)

Thanks

No way to get to it w/o removing the starter. Trust me, I've looked long and hard.
