Didnt get to much work Today. But I did discovery something I tried Yesterday... I poured some Distilled White Vinegar into a container and put the flywheel there (VERY RUSTY FLYWHEEL but i dont have any pictures)
and i pull it out today... do some light scrubbing with brush and rinse.... holy crap!
its like new

IT CAME OUT AWESOME! i put video at the bottom...

Afterwords I went ahead and put a old rusty chain, and a couple Ubolts from the Trailer in the Used vinegar that the flywheel just came from to see what would happen. I will check on it in a few days.

the biggest thing in tearing anything old apart be it a travel trailer, boat ,car is not to compromise other parts. Using the hammer worked but that is not the proper way to dismantle anything . If something was to break you would have to replace the whole rub rail as the one you have is 35 years old and matching it would be very hard. A 1/4 inch drill bit would have done it without damaging anything. I know you lucked out and you are doing a fine job...keep it up

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

Thanks Jack,
I tried all sorts of Drill Bits... The Rivets were more complicated than that.. i drew up a quick sketch... the Dark Grey Part was Hard as hell and i couldnt even sand it down with Dremel...

rivet.JPG

it kept eating away at my sand paper dremel bits... so the hammer was the best solution... plus if i had to I would bought a new Rub Rail. They sell rub rails for about 150~ around there. the one on my boat, isnt all the way around. its actually 4 pieces as shown below, I would have been fine, but i really appreciate the insight... Normally I would have drilled them out, thats what i did to remove the boat accessories (cup holders etc) they were all riveted in with the newer style rivet..

rubrail.JPG

I am going to really think about how i am going to attach it back on
Please help me folks should I Reinstall Rivets with some waterproof caulking and maybe a washer in between or nuts and bolts to hold the cap on?
Thanks in advance.

I would paint those parts or they are just going to rust again. I assume that is the plan.

Very inspirational thread! Thanks, Vlad.

For future reference, the reason you had problems with the pinstripe eraser causing the drill chuck to loosen is that you are missing the arbor the eraser is supposed to be screwed into. It's the part at the bottom of the picture below:

Bob, Oh yeah, Thats what i need. I am going to go to Harborfrieght and see if I can pick one up. Thank you for that update,

Superpop, the flywheel and the absorbor, I am most likely gonna paint... since it seems it was painted before.

Question: Will that effect the engine, if I paint the flywheel? Like will the flywheel chip paint and go inside of the engine? or the starter?

Brenn, Thank you very much for the Offer. I will be sure to add you to my friends list...

When the Boat is ready to splash, i will be Testing it (for floatation and for leaks) on Flowing Lake, but the Actually Splashing Will actually be at Lake Stevens :)

Thanks once again guys.

I didnt get much done since last video, I will be going back to my parents house (boat location) for a birthday party, i will get a little early so I can work on the boat maybe get ALL foam out from the crevices.

My little brother already helped me a heap by removing all the foam and vacuuming for me while i was at work. Thanks "Alex"

I will post updates today. Even though my wife is sick, i will make a few quick edits and hopefully post some vids and updates up and spend the rest of the night curing her cold :(

Sorry for the bad quality. I am working on constantly having my HD camera out there to do the recording, but when the battery dies I am left to use my cell phone camera... sorry.

That stuff that smells like #### is a balsa core. They didn't seal it very well and it rots away. I pulled mine out and set a small piece of 1/2 CDX just to mount the bilge pumps to. Then laid multiple layers of glass after I foam cored the strakes.

Balsa core. Ok i will look that up. Thank you, So that means I do need something in there... I figured I would pull it out and leave it out and just fiberglass it in plush....
but if you guys say that I need something in there for some reason please explain what it does?
Thanks for your responces

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

I am at work so I will get pics and video up after work.
But if anyone cares,

A couple days ago, i decided to take a break from the boat and work on my trailer.
So i went to HF and bought me a Angle grinder with warranty (40 bucks including 2 year replacement warranty :) :) )
and a 4.5" poly abrasive wheel which i found out works 110% better than the Wire Brush Wheel... look it up folks it takes the paint and rust off!

I decided to remove the rusty bolts using my double cut saw! works great even on steel! once i got the leaf spring removed i found 2 big rust holes in the main frame rails!! i went nuts, i searched everywhere and to get a replacement rail would cost around 140 each! i would need two of them... So i had already cancelled my order for new axle... and found a Craigslist add for a Rienell with Trailer!

I took a couple hours off work yesterday to go check it out. it was a 1969 rienell runabout, with trailer (C-channel not Boxed steel which is what I wanted for better maintenance!! )
I was ready to shell out the 200 bucks the guy wanted... it had a flat wheel but i can take care of that...
but when i got to the boat it looked like pooo! but it was ok, because the trailer only has surface rust so i wouldnt mind paying 200 for it... low and behold... I hit a Treasure chest!!

This is all that the boat came with...

2 Oars
3 Life Jackets
1 Stern Light
1 Fishing Pole
1 Sea Radio (Cheap its garbage)

....
now get ready for this

2 Marine Batteries (1 brand new, other one is from budget batteries!!)
1 Cuda Fish Finder with sender!!
and 1 1977 70HP Johnson outboard (70EL77S)
with controls and everything

all for 200 bucks??
did i get a deal or what! especially since i only wanted the trailer in the first place!
both the boat and trailer have titles and registration until 2012, although this saturday I am taking the boat to the Local Waste place to dispose of it, I am going to get everthing out of it first that i wanna keep.
The sanitation says it would cost around 52.50 for 1000lb...

how much do you think this rienell would weight?

but yeah i think i got a pretty good deal..
especialyl since the guy who sold it was just out in the water with it and he said it just wouldnt start... so I tried it and sure enough it just clicks.. the starter wants to move.. but it doesnt, so i am going to try to take the starter off, clean off all the battery contacts, all the starter contacts and figure out what the problem is, they starters look easy enough to disassemble... than im gonna disassemble the stuff that i need to clean/derust (not much) and beadblast and repaint it, print off factory stickers with my vinyl machine and i will sell it :)

tell me what you guys think

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

hi.....first time i have seen this thread.....

the fibreglass it self will weigh 1000 lbs......the rest is wood and foam......the windsheild can be sold for money.

the motor does not sound like a starter problem.....that is the angle the po started to take.with the new battery...but then found out the motor is locked up for some reason.

the reason the starter looks like it wants to turn is because it does.....take it off and hit they key......it will most likely spin. i think your issues are elsewhere.

but for 200 bucks........laugh all the way home with it!

enjoy your new trailer !
